In a landslide, Jose Fernandez is the National League Rookie of the Year – at least according to Sporting News. The magazine, which established the award in 1946, on Monday gave Fernandez and Rays’ outfielder Wil Myers its top rookie prizes, per voting of fellow major leaguers. Fernandez received 64 votes, 60 more than fellow Cuban and Dodgers' outfielder Yasiel Puig. Cardinals' starter Shelby Miller got two votes as did Braves' catcher/outfielder Evan Gattis and right-hander Julio Teheran.
According to the publication, Fernandez easily outdistanced his top rookie rivals for the honor, receiving 64 votes to runner-up Yasiel Puig’s four. Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller and Atlanta teammates Evan Gattis and Julio Teheran each received two votes from players. The National League Rookie of the Year as determined by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America will be announced in November, after the World Series. Fernandez, 21, was dazzling for the last-place Marlins, going 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA that was second-best in the majors.

-Sporting News MLB awards 2013: Marlins' Jose Fernandez voted top NL rookie - MLB - Sporting News
Sporting News has selected a Rookie of the Year since 1946, a year before MLB began its official award. This year's winners, as voted on by fellow players in their leagues, are Jose Fernandez of the Miami Marlins (National League) and Wil Myers of the Tampa Bay Rays (American League): Miami Marlins pitching coach Chuck Hernandez enjoys telling the story of the first time he saw Jose Fernandez pitch. Hernandez was an assistant coach at South Florida, and Fernandez was a highly recruited prepster at Alonso High School in Tampa, throwing a game against Tampa Catholic. It just so happened that Hernandez’s son, Cody, played for Tampa Catholic. Hernandez watched Fernandez warm up and quickly developed a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. After just one inning, he made the phone call to Lelo Prado, the head coach at South Florida. See, Fernandez was a South Florida signee, and Hernandez was calling to tell his boss to deliver some bad news.

To be clear, the Sporting News honor given to Jose Fernandez IS NOT the official Rookie of the Year. That's given by the BBWAA in November.
