Miami Marlins' Jose Fernandez wins Sporting News Rookie of the Year award

The Sporting News has decided to award Jose Fernandez its Rookie of the Year award by a landslide margin, and that could mean good things for the offseason official Rookie of the Year award.

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez impressed folks all year long. On Tuesday, he finally got some accolades back for his impressive work.

Sporting News named the righty their Rookie of the Year after he put up a spectacular 2013 season. Fernandez did not just win the award by a small margin, but he actually took it by a landslide. Fernandez got 64 votes among National League rookies, by far the largest total. Yasiel Puig, who many consider the next-best candidate and closest competitor to Fernandez's stake on the award, only received four votes for the award. St. Louis Cardinals starter Shelby Miller, Atlanta Braves catcher Evan Gattis, and Braves starter Julio Teheran all finished tied for third with two votes each.

The Sporting News award was voted on by Major League Baseball players, meaning that Fernandez earned more of his peer's respect than Puig and the other rookies did. That is an impressive feat given the fact that Fernandez started a lot slower and did not have the mega-hype machine that was the Los Angeles Dodgers' competitive success behind him. This bodes well for when Fernandez and Puig go head-to-head for the BBWAA version of the award, which will be announced November 11.
