Games in the Arizona Fall League are underway. The Miami Marlins have quite a few of their prospects participating in the league, hoping to gain some experience and get some at bats under their belt to prepare for the 2014 season.
Alvarez has a reputation as being a sinker/slider type pitcher. Unsurprisingly his two most effective pitches yesterday’s game were the sinker and the slider. If you look at the chart Alvarez was able to keep those pitches down in the zone. By keeping those sliders, changeups and sinkers down in the zone Alvarez was able to get a 58.33% groundball percentage.

The Miami Marlins added a couple of accomplished ex-major leaguers to their 2014 coaching staff. A former All-Star, Brett Butler joins the club as the third base/outfield/bunting coach. The Marlins' new hitting coach is Frank Menechino, who spent seven seasons in the majors from 1999-2005. Butler replaces Joe Espada, who is earmarked to manage the organization's Florida State League affiliate in Jupiter. Menechino replaces interim hitting coach John Pierson.

A fixture on the Marlins’ major league coaching staff the last four seasons, Joe Espada is going back to his player development roots. A source confirmed the Marlins have reassigned Espada from the big league staff, on which he served as third-base and outfield/base running coach, to manage Class-A Jupiter. The source said the Marlins see Espada as a future managerial candidate and approached him about getting some experience in the minors.

In his first start for Glendale in the Arizona Fall League, left-hander Andrew Heaney picked up right where he left off this summer. Heaney, the Marlins' No. 2 prospect, struck out six batters in three scoreless innings against Scottsdale on Friday, leading Glendale to a 5-1 victory at Scottsdale Stadium. Heaney used his low-90s fastball, slider and changeup to shut down the Scorpions. He said his full complement of pitches felt good. "I had all three pitches working tonight, which was nice," Heaney said. "It was nice to compete again."
A couple of new faces are joining Marlins manager Mike Redmond's staff for next season. Brett Butler, regarded as one of the best bunters and baserunners during his playing days, joins the organization as the new third-base and outfield coach. Taking over as the hitting coach will be Frank Menechino, who has spent five seasons as a hitting coach in the Yankees organization. Butler replaces Joe Espada, who will manage Miami's Class A Jupiter affiliate. And interim hitting coach John Pierson has been reassigned to the Minor League staff. The rest of the staff from Redmond's first season managing the club will be back.
