The Miami Marlins are one of the worst teams in baseball, and they were facing one of the best pitchers in baseball. So the naturally expected result, of course, is that the Fish demolished Strasburg again before losing the lead and winning it back in extra innings 9-7.
So this afternoon, the Marlins will try again, this time against lefty Ross Detwiler. They will send their own lefty, Mark Buehrle. The good news? This pitching matchup is better than last night's. The bad news? I'll be watching today's game. Uh oh.
Pitching Matchup
Proj Win% | Proj ERA | FIP | ERA | Marlins | Nationals | ERA | FIP | Proj ERA | Proj Win% |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
--- | --- | 4.18 | 3.78 | Buehrle | Detwiler | 3.15 | 3.66 | --- | --- |
The Marlins may be going to a six-man rotation in order to give Jacob Turner and Nathan Eovaldi some rest and looks in September, but the unintended consequence of that is that Mark Buehrle's 11-season 200-innings streak is in jeopardy this season. Combine the natural tendency to pull starting pitchers for pinch-hitters earlier in games and this new six-man rotation and we may see Buehrle a few innings shy of 200 innings this year. He looks to go long and avoid the long ball today.
