Florida Marlins select Jose Fernandez in First Round

New, 2 comments

The Marlins selected right-handed pitcher Jose Fernandez in the first round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft. Fernandez is 6' 3" 215 lbs out of Braulio Alonso HS in Tampa.

Fernandez has a fascinating human interest story about his younger years in Cuba and subsequent defection. We don't know all of the details yet but we will get them to you when we find the story out in more detail.

Here is what MLB had to say about him.

His fastball is 90-95 mph, and he throws a very good slider and 12-6 curve ball. He has a change but needs some work. Probably his best baseball attribute is his confidence on the mound. He has a very determined attitude and wants to get everyone out and believes he can get everyone out.

Fernandez should be comfortable in the Marlins organization and won't have much of a transition period to get adjusted into it. His biggest challenge will be with his weight.

Jose Fernandez is a very nice selection.
