Split contracts are no big deal, especially in the case of Donnie Murphy. It just allows him to get ready in the minors before being called up. Assuming he recovers nicely from his wrist surgery. With a split contract the Marlins don't have to put him on the 40-man roster, which is best for the offseason. Also, it allows the always frugal Marlins to pay him a lower salary in the minors than they will have to pay if he were up with the big club.
