Rick VandenHurk sent to Double-A

I think Matt Wilson was the first to report this in the comments yesterday and Y08Marlin filled in the second part of the story, if memory serves.

The Marlins after yesterday's game optioned Rick VandenHurk to the place he always belonged.

VandenHurk was optioned to Class AA Sunday following a second consecutive shaky outing and will be replaced in the rotation by right-hander Burke Badenhop, who was informed Sunday he would be promoted.

VandenHurk needed 75 pitches to get through 21/3 innings in the Pirates' 9-2 victory at Dolphin Stadium that prevented the Marlins from sweeping the three-game series.

Badenhop, 25, was one of six players acquired from the Tigers in the Dontrelle Willis-Miguel Cabrera trade. He won Carolina's opener at Mobile on Thursday, allowing six hits and no runs in 61/3 innings.

VandenHurk has the stuff to be a starter in the majors, he just needs to develop it.  Rick has a decent enough fast ball and a really good curve but at this point in his young life he doesn't has enough command of either to be pitching in the show.  With a little work in the minors, which should also boost his confidence, he will be fine.

I'm a little surprised that the club is bringing up Burke Badenhop, I would've figured that Doug Waechter would get the call given the fact he already has some major league experience, albeit not the best.

When Badenhop makes his start in Houston, whichever game that is, it will be his major league debut.
