Of course this early speculation, but the Marlins may platoon at third, without Alfredo being part of the mix.
With spring training starting this week, the Marlins desperately hope Jose Castillo, Dallas McPherson and/or Jorge Cantu emerge as a serviceable successor to All-Star third baseman Miguel Cabrera, who now is with Detroit.
''It's completely open,'' Marlins executive Larry Beinfest said. ''Their defensive skills are going to matter.'' (One scout said Castillo is the best option defensively.) Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he might use a platoon (McPherson is the only left-handed hitter of the three), and that Alfredo Amezaga isn't a candidate because of his value in a utility role.
Do look for Amezaga to get some playing time in at third during spring training, as well as at short, second and the outfield. In order for him to tune up for the season, he will need to play all of the positions.
