The team in planning to give Sergio Mitre some extra rest.
"We're giving him some time off," Gonzalez said. "It's not coming out right, the ball. The velocity is OK, but the life on the ball is not the same. Why risk injury right now? ... Why make him labor through it and then get hurt?"
The Marlins already skipped Mitre's turn in the rotation once this month, but the additional rest didn't produce the desired outcome. Mitre may get one more start this season if he pitches again at all.
"It's been a long time since I've played a full year consistently," said Mitre, who has totaled 149 innings, 12 2/3 fewer than his entire major league career in parts of four seasons.
This isn't too surprising and if Barone does a half-decent job expect Mitre to be shutdown for the rest of the season. Which he probably should be anyway, no matter how Barone performs.
