Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Giants (7/29)

The Marlins will be in big time sweep avoidance mode today.  The team isn't just looking to avoid a series sweep -- they are also up against a sweep on the road trip.  A statistic I never wanted to lookup: the last and only time the Marlins were swept in a road trip happened in 1998 when they went 0-9 against the Giants, Brewers and Yankees. The 2007 version of the team is better than the 1998 version and there is absolutely no reason to repeat the winless road trip.

The starting pitcher for the Marlins is Sergio Mitre.

The Giants will trot out Matt Morris to the hill.

Game time is 4:05 p.m.

Mitre is coming off his worst start of the season where his sinker wasn't working and fly balls became the standard for the outing.  But that was then, and has nothing to do with today's game.  If Sergio can get his sinker back on track, he should be fine as along as the infield backs him up.

Morris isn't the same pitcher he was with the Cardinals.  In his last seven starts, he is winless while recording a 7.98 ERA.  On top of that, he is a crappy day game pitcher posting a 6.59 ERA during the day as opposed to his night ERA of 2.99.  With the luck we have been having lately, he will probably do his Cy Young imitation today.
