Volunteers Needed

The Marlins, the Mermaids and Billy the Marlin are doing all the good.

The Special Olympics Summer Games for Track and Field Competition will be held March 4 and organizers are looking for 3,000 volunteers from the community. The volunteers will serve as ''buddies'' and ''huggers'' for the competitors. They will accompany the athletes to various events, cheer them on and be their companions for the day.

More than 1,200 mentally and/or physically challenged athletes will participate in the event sponsored by the North Miami Beach Optimist Club in memory of David L. Singer. Volunteers will receive free commemorative Special Olympics T-shirts, community service letters for all student volunteers and a free lunch.

Some of the special guests scheduled to attend are pro football, basketball, baseball and hockey players; the Miami Heat dancers; the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders; the University of Miami Sunsations; and Sebastian the Ibis; the Florida Marlins Mermaids; Burnie, the Miami Heat mascot; Billy the Marlin of the Florida Marlins; and local TV and radio personalities.

The games will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at North Miami Stadium at Florida International University, at Northeast 151st Street and Biscayne Boulevard. Large or small groups or organizations can register and participate as a unit. Call 305-935-4733.

If you can help out, that would be great and you might even get meet one of the Marlins players or possibly a Mermaid.  But if you can't, it is always nice to know that the team you support helps out the community.
