The pitching rotation for the first week of the spring has been announced and Volstad is up first against the University of Miami.
Gonzalez said Chris Volstad, the organization's top prospect, would start Tuesday's game against the University of Miami. Volstad is slated to throw two innings and each of the following pitchers are down for one: Jacob Marceaux, Ryan Tucker, Gaby Hernandez, Paul Mildren, Aaron Thompson, Owens and Matt Lindstrom.
Volstad actually signed with the University of Miami out of High School before deciding to sign with the Marlins. He no doubt has faced a few of the guys on the UM team before. It should be interesting.
After the UM game the rotation for the week breaks down thusly.
Lefty Scott Olsen will start the Grapefruit League opener on Wednesday against the Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium. The Marlins are visitors that day. On Thursday, Obermueller will get the call against the Orioles in Jupiter. And Willis will pitch on Friday on the road against the Orioles at Fort Lauderdale Stadium.
Anibal Sanchez will start on Saturday against the Cardinals, and Olsen will come back on short rest Sunday against the Cards. Ricky Nolasco will start on Monday at the Orioles.
Gonzalez said the starters will pitch no more than two innings.
Yes sir, we are getting close to organized baseball again. Personally, I can't wait.
