Out of Options

The Marlins have five players on the 40 man roster who are out of options.

The Marlins have five players in that category, but all are expected to make the club. They are: Josh Willingham, Cody Ross, Joe Borchard, Sergio Mitre and Renyel Pinto.

Out of options means if the club wants to send them to the minors they have to be removed from the 40 man roster and placed on waivers.  This known as Outrighting a player.

I would go into more detail but there is really no need in the above players case.  They will all remain on the 25 man roster for the entire season.  That is, unless for reason they get traded.
