Bat to the Head

I don't know if you saw the game last night but the home plate umpire took a blow to the face.

Ramirez was batting and when he struck the ball his bat broke at the handle with the barrel of the bat hitting home plate umpire, Jerry Layne, squarely on the side of the face.

He staggered for a couple of steps and fell to the ground.  Uggla rushed over from the on-deck circle to see if he could give him some aid.  Fortunately, the trainers from both teams weren't far behind with the Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue making their way to the scene as quickly as possible.

Layne was in obvious pain as the professionals went to work.  After about 15 minutes, it seemed much longer, he was loaded onto a stretcher and was taken for X-rays at JRS.

Fortunately, an X-ray after the game showed Layne only suffered a bruised jaw. He is expected to be available for Saturday's game.

That is wonderful news.

Here's wishing that his umpire crew mates bought him a hockey style mask in lieu of flowers.

Yesterday was a tough day at the ball park.
