Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Phillies (7/17)

TIME: 1:35 @ CBP

                                vs.
         MARLINS                                        PHILLIES
Dontrelle Willis (13-4, 2.39)               Vicente Padilla (4-8, 6.27)

Today we get our first chance to see if Dontrelle can continue his first half dominance into the second half.

There's really not much point to watching today's game though; we all know what's going to happen: the Fish will win (Dontrelle will probably dominate) and the Marlins will head to Arizona surrounded by doubt. A win today earns a split in this four game set. That will likely be just enough to keep everyone (who hasn't picked a side already) in doubt as to whether the Marlins should be buyers or sellers.

Trade rumors continue to swirl louder and louder. The last I heard (and it seems to change every few minutes), the Orioles and the Red Sox are the front-runners. Another interesting development (which has been alluded to a number of places) is that the Marlins are "forcing" Mike Lowell to be included in any deal involving Burnett. Buster Olney confirmed this directly on ESPN Radio this morning. Like always, I'm not sure what to make of the Lowell portion of this development. I'm taking it to mean that the Marlins know something that the rest of us don't (i.e. that Lowell's decline is irreversible - at least in teal - so the front office wants to move him while he at least has some value). Trading Lowell also frees up some payroll flexibility in coming seasons. (Interestingly, trade talk isn't getting much coverage locally, as attention is mainly focused on whether Pat Riley or Stan Van Gundy will coach the Heat next season.)

In other news, ESPN will be rebroadcasting Home Run Derby tonight at 6. Oh, wait... I mis-read that. At six they're showing the Red Sox and Yankees. Al Leiter will start for the Yankees - and thus my confusion about Home Run Derby. If you can find a line on tonight's game, I'd suggest taking the over.

In ichthyomancy, I want a non-regular starter - assuming there is one today. In order of preference, I want Treanor or Conine. If neither of them plays today, I'll sit out the player portion of today's ichthyomancy action.

The new ichthyomancy pick table is below. The second half is still young, so feel free to start playing today. Also, picks (unless a trade has already been announced or been confirmed via rumors) in the A.J. Burnett Ichthyomancy Sweepstakes can still be made.
