Marlins Walking Wounded Report

Since the Marlins have a few position players who are still nursing injuries, it is time to see where they stand.

First up: Cody Ross.

Soggy conditions on Sunday didn't prevent Cody Ross from getting in some needed work as he rebounds from a hyperextended left knee.

"I'm doing everything [Sunday], and going from there," said Ross, who could be back in the lineup as early as Monday when the Astros visit Jupiter, Fla.

A more realistic game could be on Tuesday against the Orioles on Tuesday at Fort Lauderdale Stadium.

When he returns, he plans on wearing a protective sleeve on his left knee. He hasn't worn one thus far in spring.

If he left knee was only hyperextended, he should be ready by Tuesday. My only concern is that the front office will use this as an excuse to keep Maybin in the majors. He is not ready.

Second up: Jeremy Hermida.

Jeremy Hermida (tight left hamstring) continues to take batting practice and do limited work as he eases toward doing some running drills.

"eases toward doing some running drills"? The Marlins are seven days away from the start of the season and Hermida can't even run yet?

This does not bode well.

If Hermida can't go, and it is doubtful he can, Gonzalez will probably get the call to start in right.

Next: Mike Rabelo.

With the prospect of Mike Rabelo (knee sprain) opening the season on the disabled list growing more likely, Paul Hoover and John Baker are vying to fill in behind starting catcher Matt Treanor.

Should Rabelo be unable to go, the backup catching job will fall to Hoover. That is, unless, the Marlins do something stupid and decide that hitting is more important than defense at the catcher's spot. That could, of course, happen. I think John Baker is more than likely destined to be the Marlins catcher of the future but he still needs some more time to work on his defense. The other thing is that there is no reason to start the clock on Baker since Hoover's clock has already been started.

Finally: Matt Treanor.

Matt Treanor was off after he caught five innings of a Minor League game on Sunday. Treanor has been bothered by a sore left calf. He likely will play on Monday.

Assuming yesterday's game didn't aggravate the injury, Treanor will be the starting catcher when the season opens.
