Game Today

So far the Marlins are undefeated in the Grapefruit League.  Of course, they haven't won a game either, but the former sounds so much better.

The Marlins travel to Ft. Lauderdale to play the Orioles.

The Marlins starting pitcher will be Sergio Mitre with Andrew Miller, et al, figuring in the mix somewhere.

The Orioles will counter with Adam Loewen and a bunch of other guys.

Game time is 1:05 p.m.

Two of the regulars making the trip are Hanley and Danny, both of whom took the day off yesterday.  Welcome back to bus leagues fellows.  I would normally mention something about it being a short trip and it is, mileage-wise.  Time-wise is a completely different thing.

There is no radio coverage of the game.  But hopefully, I will get the magical updating box score posted at some point.

In the meantime, Have a Great Day!

This is an open thread.

Working backwards from the box score...
It looks like it played out thusly:

Leadoff single to Whitesell.
Padilla strikeout.
Dubois single.
Maxwell reaches on Gwyn's throwing error.
Orr grounder up the middle, Whitesell beats the throw home (said to be high), tie game.
Nieves flyball out.
Bergolla strikeout, game over.

Interesting CF battle, too
Ross, De Aza and Maybin all made strong cases today, it seems.
Ross had a 3 run shot (and drew a walk), De Aza hit a granny, and Maybin had an RBI (with two out) and two double in 4 ABs.
Personally, I'm a Cody Ross fan. However, I would be fine with he and De Aza splitting time, depending on the situation. I think Maybin needs more time to develop, even though he's done well in this young spring training season.

It cannot be said enough:
Spring. Training. Stats. Don't. Matter.

I wasn't emphasizing the stats
So much as I was saying that if all three continue spring training playing at a high level, it will be interesting to see who all gets a shot to be CF during the regular season.

Game observations
I was at the game today so I thought I'd share some of my observations.

As for Mitre, he was not close to the strike zone most of the time. This was before he said that his elbow got stiff. He didn't appear to be in any pain. Hopefully that's a good sign.

The error Cantu made was a routine pop-up in the infield that was in and out of his glove.

The grand slam from de Aza was one of those that you knew it was gone after it left his bat. Cody's 3-run homer was great, too.

The game had 14 walks and 3 hit batters between both teams. Seems like it must still be early spring training rust that needs to come off. A lot of guys were missing by a lot and there were a lot of full counts.

This was the first time I had a chance to see Andrew Miller and I wasn't disappointed. He did pretty well even though he, too was having control issues.

Sinkbeil's sinker sounds like the batter is trying to hit a shotput with a 2x4. He was doing well until he hit Terrero and then it seemed like that shook him up a little. He had some pretty long battles with some hitters which drove up his pitch count which is why I think he was pulled early in the 9th. In fact, Carvajal was up in the bottom of the 8th. I didn't think that Sinkbeil was even coming back out.

Hanley's speed is just awesome! He was clearly safe when he stole both second and third and his speed is what caused Ramon Hernandez to hurry his throw to third which caused him to make a bad throw that ended up in the outfield.

As a side note, I was sitting between a couple of Orioles fans from Fort Worth and a guy from Toronto that is a Blue Jays fan. All in all, interesting day and a great game.

Hit a shotput with a 2x4!
Funny

I heard (most of) the game online from the Orioles announcers so this is a nice perspective. Thanks!

The Cubs
USAToday
The battle is on for a right-handed reliever to take Dempster's spot, but not the closer's role, in the bullpen. RHP Michael Wuertz, a dependable middle man for several years, is assured of a job. The Cubs are looking at Rule 5 man Tim Lahey, as well as Billy Petrick, Jose Ascanio and veteran non-roster men Chad Fox and Shingo Takatsu.
