The Draft is Today

Or at least the first five rounds.  The amateur draft will take place in Orlando and the Marlins have the following scheduled to attend with everyone else taking their place in the Jupiter complex.

Marlins special assistant Andre Dawson will head a contingent that will include player development assistant Manny Colon and scout Brian Bridges. Fleming and scouting director Stan Meek will direct the Marlins' selections from the team's spring training site in Jupiter.

As usual, the folks in Jupiter will be calling the shots with input from those actually on the draft floor.

Since 2003 the Marlins have always taken a pitcher in the first round.  While the team claims it takes the best player, and may be they do, but it always seems to a be pitcher.

The Marlins are in the 12th position for the first round in this year's draft.  After that, they will draft the 77th player overall in the second round.  The 107th player in the third round.  The 137th player in the fourth round and finally, the 167th player in the fifth.

Some predictions about who the Marlins will take in the first round.

Baseball America projects that the Marlins will take pitcher Jarrod Parker, pitcher Phillippe Aumont or right fielder Jason Heyward.

Baseball Prospectus orders it in a different way.  (This could be Premium content from the site.  Which brings me to another point, they do some of the best baseball writing on the web and they are well worth the entry fee.)

12. Florida Marlins

The Marlins had four first-round picks two years ago, and used every one of them to select a high school arm. Aumont and Texas high school righty Blake Beavan both have the kind of size and velocity that Florida covets, but they'll go with upside from a hitter this time around, and take Jason Heyward. The Georgia high school talent has more raw tools than anyone in the draft, with power, speed, plus arm strength, and a body that draws comparisons to Dave Winfield.

Pick: Jason Heyward, OF, Henry County HS (Georgia)

Over at fellow SB Nation site, Minor League Ball, they see it this way:

12) Marlins: Matt Harvey, RHP, Conn. HS

And finally, at a blog I was unfamiliar with until last night, Cardinals Baseball 2007 has this prediction:

12) Florida Marlins: Phillippe Aumont, RHP, Ecole du Versant Gatineau (Quebec) - Another arm for an organization teeming with them. The 6-foot-7 Aumont might be too tough to pass up, with his motion and sinker that draw Kevin Brown comparisons. And, as Florida well knows, there's no such thing as too many pitching prospects.

My guess: if Jarrod Parker is still around by the twelfth, and he won't be, the Marlins will take him.  More than likely the Marlins will make Phillippe Aumont their first round pick since drafting high school pitchers is what we do.  I don't think Harvey will even come under consideration since his agent is Scott Boras.

I going to start a diary for the draft and any input you can give will be much appreciated.

And the Fish take...
Matthew Dominguez, 3B, Chatsworth HS, Van Nuys, Calif.

"While teammate Mike Moustakas has been getting more buzz lately because of his torrid home run pace, Dominguez' skills should not be overlooked. He, too, can hit for power and should hit for average as well. At the same time, he's considered to be one of the better defensive third baseman to come out of a draft in a long time. The whole package should make him a first round pick."

. . .Ironically, Dominguez attended the same high school as Marlins general manager Larry Beinfest.

Dominguez was a high school teammate of Mike Moustakas, taken second overall by the Kansas City Royals.

As a senior, Dominguez batted .411 with 10 home runs in 90 at-bats.

In some scouting reports, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound 17-year-old has drawn comparisons to Washington's Ryan Zimmerman. . .

12. Florida Marlins: Matt Dominguez, 3B, Chatsworth H.S. (Calif.), 6-2, 185. He played in the considerable shadow of his high school teammate, Mike Moustakas, yet Dominguez is considered a better fielder than the slugger who went No. 2 to the Royals. Dominguez has great bat speed, but some scouts were troubled by his hitting mechanics. He is expected to sign rather than take a scholarship to Cal State Fullerton.
