Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Astros (9/15)

The series finale. The Fish need a win to avoid a split. Andy Pettitte takes the hill against Jason Vargas. Big ballgame for young Vargas. Maybe he'll pitch like a young Pettitte.

Don't forget to make your leader/award picks in the thread below.

Not a bad pick

Cool Standings
The current Cool Standings have the Marlins running a close third behind the Phils and Astros for the Wild Card. This is going to be a heck of a finish.

What I'm watching for
It sounds like Jack talked to Vargas about "going after hitters." I'm taking that to mean that Vargas needs to increase his strike-to-ball ratio and that we'll need to keep an eye on his pitch count.

That's all from me, Captain Obvious, for now.

Pettitte's shoes look funny
Oh - and tonight would be a good night for the Rally Marlin to make an appearance (assuming that we need a rally at some point).

Ok Mike, your statement just made me think
of something, what exactly is your definition of "rally" in a baseball game. Do you have to be behind in a game to rally, or is it sumply when a team scores a few runs in an inning?

Well that's true too
I was thinking a come from behind victory would be nice.

But an all around hit parade and game long dominating performance would be nice too.

I'd just like a W tonight.

Ditto
But to clarify, I want a W that doesn't come from Wiggins's name (well, both W's together wouldn't be bad either, I suppose).

And he probably begged Jack a lot.

by mike42 on Sep 15, 2005 8:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Its because
The pitchers secretly think Treanor is a sucky pitch caller
Mmmm....Fish Sticks

by Jsprtold on Sep 15, 2005 8:45 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Are you guessing or is that true?
The team ERA with LoDuca behind the plate is about 1 run lower than when Treanor is back there.

by mike42 on Sep 15, 2005 8:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I mean
I havnt talked to the pitchers and got their opinions or anything, but from the quotes and things I've heard it sounds like LoDuca is a better pitch caller (maybe thats why Treanor was in the minors for so long) and the pitchers wont say anything to Treanor because they dont want to hurt his feelings.
Mmmm....Fish Sticks

by Jsprtold on Sep 15, 2005 8:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I suspect that you're right
A veteran on the bench would have been nice.

Treanor seems like a nice enough guy, but we're here to win ballgames - not to have a tea party.

by mike42 on Sep 15, 2005 8:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Mike DeFelice would be nice right now....
I think he bowed out of the 2nd catcher race late in spring training because he and Treanor became friends and he couldnt be responsible for making Matt go back to the minors.

Commercials
How do these Red Cross commercials work? Does the Red Cross have to pay for them? If so, they should stop running them because they're on all the time. They should use the TV money to help people.

Still
If the gov't is paying for them, they should put that money towards helping people.

I'm hoping that FSN (and the other networks) are donating the time (effectively out of their own pockets).

by mike42 on Sep 15, 2005 8:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Mmmm....Fish Sticks

by Jsprtold on Sep 15, 2005 8:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They have to have reached the point...
of diminishing returns. By this point I think that most people who have televisions are aware of what's going on.

For me personally, I've already given/pledged the money that I can afford to give. Maybe if the commercials were aimed more at telling you what you could do non-monetarily they'd get more out of them at this point. But by now I think everyone knows how to give money if they want to.

by mike42 on Sep 15, 2005 9:04 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Lets see.....
Alex Gonzalez has 16 fielding errors in 367 attempts....95.8 Fielding Percentage

Damion Easley has 3 fielding errors in 73 attempts....96 Fielding Percentage

Im torn....

Mmmm....Fish Sticks

by Jsprtold on Sep 15, 2005 9:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not buying that
A - Fielding percentage is weak. Alex has much better range and gets to way more balls

B - The sample size is small.

Just watch them play. Granted, Alex is having (arguably) his worst year in the field. But even on the plays that Easley does make, he looks awkward.

He just looks different out there. Maybe I'm crazy.

by mike42 on Sep 15, 2005 10:32 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't know exactly
Take his pitches to Delgado: everything's either on the black (or at the knees) and everything else is just off the plate. He's not messing around or risking anything - but he's not nibbling either.

He's just tough.

I fear this is a lot of what the Fish will see in the playoffs. And they haven't been so great at hitting the normal pitchers this year.

"Everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance.
Everybody thinks it's true."

If Wiggins shows up, I will let him identify the artist.

I try very hard,
My friend.  You help me very much by having very low standards.

Thank you for that.

Thank you Craig
Now I can't get that song out of my head. I keep humming it to myself.

And you are very welcome
I hate when that happens but there are worse songs to get stuck in your head, I suppose.

Sorry about that.

Points
Attendance was 35,960 so Stranded wins the point.

Cabrera gets a point for Fishfan.

Barry grounded out
Utah - TCU is tied with one minute left. A possible exciting finish to come.

Yeah, I know. I need help. At least I'm not watching Hampton vs. NC A&T on ESNPU.

Wow
The Phillies lost tonight too. We effectively have a 3 way tie right now for the WC.

OK - not a tie
Houston is up by a 1/2 game or .003.

Wow Mike....
I didnt even notice how close the Indians are getting to the White Sox....only 4.5 GB
Mmmm....Fish Sticks

Yeah
It's getting scary. The Sox have looked horrible lately. And they have six games left against the Indians (three starting on Monday).

Looks like you all had fun tonight
Except for the miserable loss, of course.

I went out for drinks with the church choir after rehearsal - and had to explain to all the nice people why I was cursing up a storm when we got to the bar and I saw the score of the game!

Barry Bonds tidbit for Mike
Today Rudy Seanez (yes, that Rudy Seanez) struck out Bonds on three pitches, all swinging.  As you can imagine, that does not happen often.

What you might not realize is that the last time Barry Bonds did that was FIVE YEARS AGO!

Since the last time Barry Bonds swung and missed 3 pitches, he has walked around 660 times.

Therefore, Barry Bonds is not actually human.  He is, to quote Nietzsche in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, "Uberman".

Ummm...
How can Rudy Seanez have done that when he pitches for San Diego, and San Diego isn't even in San Francisco tonight (LA is)? Also, Bonds didn't strike out at all tonight.

That would have been yesterday
or, really - the day before.  How about we just say - Wednesday.

How About...
... we just agree it happened recently and never speak of this dark, tragic episode in the history of FishStripes ever again?

Nope. You must be hearing things.

Please excuse me...
What I meant to say was that today I heard... Van Horne mentioned it on his radio broadcast today.  Yes, the actual game was on 9/14/05.  Here's the box  I hope that I did not offend your virgin ears with my misinformation.  Woe is me... woe, woe is me.

Geez - they're touchy
I'm also having a hard time believing that Bonds was called out on strikes twice in his first couple games back. That's a rarity too.

Barry is not himself.

Thanks For Clarifying
And no, you didn't hurt my virgin ears. Only profanity hurts my virgin ears.
