Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Rays (6/24)

TIME: 7:15 @ the Trop

                             vs.
         MARLINS                                     RAYS
Alois Leiter (3-6, 6.39)               Doug Waetcher (3-4, 5.63)

Ichthyomancy 2.0 (read the comments for full details) scoring rules are in effect beginning with tonight's game.

I'll be on the road this weekend, so content may be light and I definitely won't be around in the open threads. Craig is in charge all weekend.

In ichthyomancy, I'll take Delgado tonight and a crowd of 11,111.

Other Picks:
Double B - Cabrera

What's This?
Now YOU'RE following MY predictions? Maybe my Publix fish is better than you thought, after all! :-P I take Willingham if he plays, Louie if Willingham doesn't. Thankfully, Lois doesn't bat tonight, so I don't have to make any predictions about him at the plate. Instead, I'll go with Delgado getting another HR since he historically does well in this park.

I am doing no such thing
My fish just told me Cabrera. The Leiter pick may just be wishful thinking, but I'm sticking with it anyway.

Attendance
12,000. Forgot to say it the first time around.

I'll take
Pierre again tonight.  I think my fish were just a day off...

14,789.

Leiter goes only six, but gets the win - giving up three runs.

I'm guessing...
we will be seeing Hollins' catch of Lo Duca's fly ball on Sports Center tonight.

Nice catch

That was a heck of a catch
He had no business catching that ball. Back in the day when I played in the OF, those were the most fun plays to make (not that I could have made the play that Hollins made tonight, of course).

Play of the Day
Hollins' catch was the #1 play of the day on Sportscenter.

Sea Bass
has extended his hit streak to 14 games.

Sorry Carolina
Leiter goes 6.1

Very close though

Half credit?
That was a pretty bold pick to make and she was close... Leiter had a one-hitter through three innings.

Post game
On the Rays post-game radio they talked about how the Marlins pen outperformed the Rays' tonight. It was kind of weird to hear.

Points
I win the attendance point tonight. Maybe I'm stealing Craig's good luck with the attendance.

Wiggins gets a full point for JP. Huge hit for Pierre tonight.

Full points to Danielfred1235 (Castillo) and me (Delgado).

Delgado IBB
What was up with the intentional pass for Delgado in the 1st? Did they talk about that?

by mike42 on Jun 24, 2005 11:30 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Didn't see it....
I was still at work, sorry.

by craig on Jun 25, 2005 12:11 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It worked
Man on second, two out. Delgado got four intentional balls to bring up Lowell, who struck out. It seemed odd in the first inning (especially when the Delgado came up in a similar situation later in the game and they pitched to him).

BTW - I ended up going to the game tonight. Didn't think I'd make it here in time. The Trop was much nicer than I expected. We were also to walk up and buy tickets for half of face value on the street. Very odd.

Trop
I had the Rays broadcast tonight and they were showing the ballpark from different angles than I had seen before and I was surprised, it looked like a pretty nice park, before I had always thought it was ugly.

First time
That was kind of the consensus we had tonight (went with my parents - it was there first time). It was very clean and felt a lot different than what I'd expected from having seen it on TV. They even had a bar and a restaurant that were offering 1/2 price drinks after the game (inside of the stadium) - I've never seen that before.

There were a lot of Marlins fans there tonight. And actually, I expected the announced crowd to be larger. It wasn't a very large crowd, but I thought there were more like 15,000 people there.

Attendance
From the crowd shots that the crew was showing I felt pretty good about my chances, needless to say I was shocked when I checked the official attendance.

by craig on Jun 25, 2005 12:36 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm still not sure how this worked
Maybe they comped a bunch of tickets tonight. I'm still not clear on whether or not the announced attendance reflects the number of people in the building or the number of tickets that were sold. If it's the latter, free tickets given to youth groups (or whatever) wouldn't count.

by mike42 on Jun 25, 2005 12:37 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It has to be something...
because the crowd sure looked a lot larger than 10,624

by craig on Jun 25, 2005 12:42 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If You Go Back...
... and look at Rays box scores from earlier this year, they had a game on a Friday night with an official attendance of 8,884. Yes, less than nine thousand. I was like, "Damn." (Just like I was after hearing that I moved ahead of Carolina, only to fall behind Mike. :-P)
