Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Astros at Marlins (8/3)

Astros are in town and hopefully all bleary eyed after playing some Midnight baseball last night against the Braves.

The Marlins starting pitcher is Dontrelle Willis.

The Astros are going to send Roy Oswalt to the hill.

Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Willis pitched well in his last couple of outings but doesn't have much to show for it. He is starting to look like the Dontrelle of old, and hopefully he will continue to build on that. Treanor should be catching tonight.

The Astros have only one really good starter and the Marlins get to see him tonight, lucky us. Oswalt has allowed only 1 ER in his last 13 innings. However, when he is pitching on the road he changes from being next to unhittable to human. His home ERA is 2.30 as compared to his road ERA of 5.36.

What the heck happened? We've got a depressingly depleted rotation, so we go ahead and cut one of the only reliable starters? The day after he strikes out a career-high?? What's the deal?

My guess

My guess is that we were trying to trade him, and put him on irrevocable waivers so that more teams would be interested because we were under the impression that nobody would claim him, and got burned.

That's what I figured, but

I always thought that when teams try to sneak someone through waivers for trade purposes, they still can keep the player if another team blocks the trade by claiming him.

I don't know why the Marlins would have done it differently, or how one of the best GMs in the game could have let that happen. Sigh.
