Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Open Thread and Ichthyomancy: Marlins at Dodgers (5/16)

TIME: 10:10 @ Chavez Ravine

                          vs.
      MARLINS                                   DODGERS
Big Moe (1-1, 2.05)                      Brad Penny (2-1, 3.97)

If you can, try to get the LA feed tonight so you can hear Vin Scully. That, my friends, is a real treat.

My fish is confused about who to take today, as no one (possibly even including Skipper Jack) is sure who will play where. So I'll play it safe and go with Miguel Cabrera. For attendance, I'll go with 34,023.

Other Picks:
Danielfred1235 - Lowell (with two homers) and 17,856
Double B - Moehler
Wiggins - Cabrera

Make your picks and discuss...

Cabrera seems the safest choice for tonight. So I'll go with him.

Stuck
I want to change my pick so that I can get caught up, but no one else seems appealing tonight.

I guess I'll have to be settle for not falling any farther behind tonight.

Maybe I'll get lucky with the attendance.

Yes
You can have up until an hour after the first pitch (or when they announce it - whichever is earlier).

Conine if he plays

E entonces?
What if he doesn't play?

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Miguel
Cabrera to start at 3rd tonight.

Conine's starting in left.

Other games
The White Sox are playing on ESPN.

The Braves (vs. Padres) just started on TBS (the Braves aren't winning, yet).

Old Times
JP singles off of Penny and then goes to stand next to Choi at first.

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 10:17 PM EDT reply actions

On second thought
It's too late now (he's in the box), but I should have picked LoDuca tonight.

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 10:18 PM EDT reply actions

Yahoo Yell
I wonder if the Yahoo noise the Dodgers play is actually sponsored by Yahoo. It probably is, and that's just sad.

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 10:22 PM EDT reply actions

Ok
I'm happy with my pick again.

Cabrera goes deep. 2 - 0 Fish.

And the last time the Marlins led... well, techincally it was yesterday, but it feels like it was a long time ago.

Waltz is on tonight
Introduces Choi first as a former Cub. While true, most of us care that he was a Marlin (he did mention that too, but not until after pointing out the Cub affiliation).

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

Me no like
The Dodgers darkened up the outfield wall this year (it's decidely navy and not Dodger blue). I'm not a fan.

Apparently that, and a number of the other "enhancements" they made to the stadium during the offseason were not well received.

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

Ground Rule Double
... which should really be called a double that bounces over the fence, as it has nothing to do with the ground rules of the particular stadium (the rule applies everywhere).

Is it just me, or does it seem like you almost always see a ball bounce up into the stands at Dodger Stadium?

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

without Extra Innings...
I really can't tell you, since I don't get to watch many games there.

by Carolina on May 16, 2005 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Looking it up...
I'd like to look it up somehow, but I'm not sure where I could find stats of "true" doubles versus doubles that bounced into the seats.

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

don't want to jinx anybody
So as to avoid an ichthymancy jinx (I occasionally suffer from bad luck) I'm taking one for the team and not picking anyone.

Gotta say though, I'm watching the game, and it is begining to irritate me just how much this guy sounds like he's rooting for the other team.

Case in point: Did you catch the way he called those two doubles?  Like it hurt.  He called them as if they caused him physical pain.  Why is this?  can't I have a friggin homer?????

by fishfan24 on May 16, 2005 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

Inflection
His delivery is just odd. Maybe he's trying to be impartial, but I think his voice/speech pattern is just odd.

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Pierre
did he just steal his second base? Is Penny's delivery really slow or something?

by Carolina on May 16, 2005 10:42 PM EDT reply actions

Yes
Waltz and Tommy commented about Penny being slow to the plate.

I'm guessing that Pierre has watched him enough from the outfield to know how to read his move.

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

At least we're ahead....
I'm just nit-picking I guess.  It is great to be ahead right now.  And I really like that stat about our record when we score first.  Those were some nice hits from Alex and Damion.  And of course the homer and the steals.

by fishfan24 on May 16, 2005 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

Penny's delivery
I don't thin it's as much that it's slow as he just ignores runners a little bit and doesn't have a good move to first.  Pierre gets a big lead, and when he has that he can go.

Tommy Lasagna
Lasorda's at the ballpark tonight (shock). He doesn't look happy.

Alyssa Milano
Is attendance tonight... who's the new man? I thought she was with Matt Leinart of USC.

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

Milano and Leinart
Milano and Leinart link

Quoted from there:

Even Leinart's love life has been the topic of gossip columns. He's been linked to everyone from Jessica Simpson's best friend, CaCee Cobb, to Alyssa Milano. "It's crazy," Leinart says of the rumor mill. "Alyssa Milano is a friend of mine and nothing has ever happened between us, and CaCee is a friend and we hung out during the season. I get linked with these people because these are celebrities I've hung out with, and it's kind of sad that I can't go out with them without getting my name in the paper. I just want to hang out. I don't want to be in all the magazines; that's not who I am."

In fact, Leinart has been dating USC freshman basketball player Brynn Cameron since February. The two had been friends since they met in a study hall in October. "I have a girlfriend now who I'm very happy with," says Leinart, who attended a handful of women's basketball games this past season disguised in a hat and an oversized hooded sweatshirt.

Start getting used to this.

Waltz again
Richie admitted that he learned that the Dodgers are struggling to score runs while listening to the radio on his ride to the park today.

I wish I could believe he was kidding.

Slump?
Gone.

Love the reverse jinx.

by fishfan24 on May 16, 2005 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah...
Tommy said that Juan was in a skump.  Like .05 seconds later he smacks the line drive homerun.

Reverse jinx. It obviously has nothing to do with the HR, but I like it when funny things like that happen.

by fishfan24 on May 16, 2005 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Slump
not Skump... damn typos

by fishfan24 on May 16, 2005 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Lowell
If only they'd talk like this about Lowell.

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought
for a second that you'd coined a new word.

by Carolina on May 16, 2005 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Skump
Yeah - I kind of like it. We should start to use it.

Like, "I miss Lowell. I know he's skumping, but he's still an all-star in my book."

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Craig?
Where's Craig?

Two days in a row without him... I'm getting worried.

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

Comments
The comments are skumping. The Craig talk killed things. I hope Craig comes back.

Crowd Speculation
They're talking about the crowd tonight and saying it could be north of 40K.

I can't get over the huge crowds on this trip.

Tomorrow should be huge too as they're letting kids in for free or for $2.

Kelly Wunsch
Wunsch is in to pitch for the Dodgers. I know he's not the greatest, but I'd pay to watch him pitch.

by mike42 on May 16, 2005 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry
I was gone for a bit.  Who's this Wunsch guy?  Funny delivery.

Oh well, he's gone.

by fishfan24 on May 17, 2005 12:02 AM EDT reply actions

KW
I like Wunsch. And besides, he's a former White Sox.

by mike42 on May 17, 2005 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Cool
Never seen him before.  He seemed like he would be hard on a lefty.

Did the Sox finally win tonight? It was close while I was watching it.

by fishfan24 on May 17, 2005 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

No, they lost
I'm pretty sure they're starting down the path to suckitude - or at least that they're due for a serious skump.

by mike42 on May 17, 2005 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

need sleep
I may get off the comp soon... early day at work.

Damn West coast games.

by fishfan24 on May 17, 2005 12:03 AM EDT reply actions

Let's see Lenny Harris against Gagne...
He might be up soon.  Pinch-hitting for Big Mo.  Mo's count must be getting up there, right?

by fishfan24 on May 17, 2005 12:06 AM EDT reply actions

Lenny vs. Gagne
That's an ugly image. I'd rather see Aguila or Lowell.  But yeah, they'll probably PH.

by mike42 on May 17, 2005 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Memories...
Lenny hit a big double off the wall against Gagne last year in a tie game.  Made him blow the save.  But you're right, Mike will get in before him... even though Jack is partial to Lenny a bit.

Taco bell think outside the bun?

by fishfan24 on May 17, 2005 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Done...
going to bed to watch the rest of the game...

GO FISH!

by fishfan24 on May 17, 2005 12:21 AM EDT reply actions

Good night
But if they lose, the late inning skump is on you.

by mike42 on May 17, 2005 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Tried to go to sleep
But had to watch that inning...

Ok, so I'm not one to say I told you so, especially because I'm often wrong, but I was close!  I called a Lenny Harris pinch-hit.  It just wasn't against Gagne.

I must have been using old fish-guts.

Ok, so I'm done for real this time.

by fishfan24 on May 17, 2005 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Too much excitement
The bullpen made that too exciting. Luckily they got out of the 7th.

by mike42 on May 17, 2005 12:22 AM EDT reply actions

Attendance
They just read the # on TV. It's well north of 40,000, but I missed the exact number. So no attendance winners tonight.

I don't get it. It must be Trevor Hoffman t-shirt night or something.

by mike42 on May 17, 2005 12:26 AM EDT reply actions

Jones Hugs
After hugging out the last two batters, literally, Todd Jones seemed to limp off the field.

Yes, I'm injury paranoid, but that's the last thing we need.

by mike42 on May 17, 2005 1:10 AM EDT reply actions

Tonight's Points
Full points to me (yeah!), Carolina, and Wiggins for Cabrera.

Double B gets a point for Moehler.

Everyone else receives a complimentary version of our game to play at home.
