Sanabia Shuts Down Phillies

It's no question that Alex Sanabia has struggled all year, at times looking lost on the mound. However, outings like this on Monday are reminders of why the Marlins keep giving him so many chances. Going six and one-third innings and allowing just one run against a veteran lineup is an impressive task. Sanabia's only big mistake was leaving a first-pitch changeup up in the zone to Domonic Brown, who hit it well into the right field bleachers.

Sanabia's next start will likely be against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, which is sure to be a arduous outing considering the drastic contrast between the friendly confines of Marlins Park and the hitter friendly U.S. Cellular.

Marlins Lineup Clicks

Cole Hamels pitched very well Monday night, striking out ten Marlins and walking none in six innings of work. However, somehow, the Marlins still touched him for seven hits and two runs. Justin Ruggiano, who finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, hit an opposite field double to score Placido Polanco all the way from first base, giving Miami a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning. Placido Polanco, Marcell Ozuna, and Chris Coghlan all also had two hits. Facing Hamels was a formidable challenge, but the Marlins really stepped up to the plate to give Sanabia and the other Marlins pitchers some run support. For as much as I have ripped on the Miami bats this year, the Marlins should be pleased with how well their lineup performed on Monday night.

Triple-A: New Orleans Zephyrs
L 3-6 @ Fresno Grizzlies

Full Box Score

Ed Lucas, SS: 2-for-5
Bryan Petersen, RF: 2-for-5, RBI

Brian Flynn, SP: 5.1 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 5 K, 2 HR

Brian Flynn had a rough start facing a potent Fresno lineup, but on the bright side, he does have fourteen strikeouts and no walks in his last two starts. Flynn struggled keeping the ball in the ballpark, as he allowed two homers, which accounted for five out of the six runs he allowed.

Double-A: Jacksonville Suns
W 3-1 @ Mississippi Braves

Sam Dyson, SP: 5 IP, 6 H, ER, K
Arquimedes Caminero, RP: 1.0 IP, K
Michael Brady, RP: 1.0 IP, K, SV (7)

Both Jake Marisnick and Kyle Jensen went yard in Jacksonville's 3-1 in Mississippi. Arquimedes Caminero and Michael Brady both came on in relief of Sam Dyson and took care of their business.

High Class-A: Jupiter Hammerheads
W 5-2 @ Palm Beach Cardinals

Full Box Score

Alex Burg, 1B: 1-for-4, HR (1), 3 RBI
Brent Keys, LF: 2-for-5, RBI
Austin Nola, SS: 2-for-4, 2B, BB
Austin Barnes, DH: 1-for-4, 2B, BB

Jose Urena, SP: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB, 5 K
Jordan Conley, RP: 1.1 IP, H, SV (3)

Jose Urena had a nice bounce back start for Jupiter, as he pitched six dominant innings in the win. His 4.74 ERA isn't at all telling of the success he has had this year, aside from a few rough starts. Brent Keys had his third straight multi-hit game, raising his average on the season to .367 in fourteen games.

Low Class-A: Greensboro Grasshoppers
W 8-5 @ Lakewood BlueClaws

Full Box Score

Cameron Flynn, LF: 3-for-4, 2 3B, 2 RBI
Anthony Gomez, SS: 2-for-4, BB, RBI

Daniel Oliver, SP: 3.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K

Behind two triples from Cameron Flynn, Greensboro was able to score a bunch of runs against Lakewood on Saturday. Flynn, selected out of Kentucky in the 23rd round of the 2012 Amateur Draft, is fairly raw and doesn't have the number of innings under his belt that many players drafted out of college do, due to missing an entire year in college with a hand injury. For a player that only had two triples in the entire 2012 season, two in one game is even more impressive.

The top five base stealers in the Miami Marlins farm system

1. Isaac Galloway, CF
Team: High Class A Jupiter

Galloway currently leads all Marlins affiliated players with 13 stolen bases. Not only is Isaac Galloway the top base stealer in the Marlins system, he might be the best athlete in the organization as well. At one time viewed as a first-round pick, Galloway fell to the Marlins in the 8th round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft after it became apparent just how raw of an athlete he was. Galloway only has 55 stolen bases in six seasons, but he missed almost all of the 2010 and 2012 seasons. Galloway might reach the majors one day as a fourth outfielder and pinch runner, but due to his unrefined mechanics and rough approach at the plate, he probably won't become the All-Star center fielder that scouts saw in high school. Nonetheless, Galloway is the top base stealer in the Marlins farm system due to his crazy athleticism and raw speed, even though he lacks the track record of some of the other players on this list.

2. Juancito Martinez, OF
Team: Low Class A Greensboro

Juancito Martinez is a very interesting prospect. He already has 48 career stolen bases (12 so far this year in the South Atlantic League) even though this is his first year in full-season ball. Martinez's ability is obvious. However, he needs to be careful with his speed. Martinez has already been thrown out seven times in 2013, which is more than twice as many times as he was thrown out in 2012, despite already playing in one-third as much games as he did in 2012. Hopefully, this is just an oddity and Martinez will continue to avoid being thrown out as he did in his past. If Martinez can stay on the field and become a more reliable option on the base-paths, it's not unreasonable to think he could steal around 50 bases in 2013.

3. Gorkys Hernandez, CF
Team: Triple-A New Orleans

The most well-known player on this list, Gorkys Hernandez is also the only one with major league experience. With 177 career stolen bases, Hernandez is the most refined base thief, aside from Juan Pierre, of course, in the Marlins organization. However, Hernandez only has seven stolen bases for Triple-A New Orleans in 2013 because he has struggled to get on-base. Also, he is the oldest player by a few years, on this list. Hernandez has the ceiling of a fourth outfielder down the line, but with the Marlins current outfield situation, they might take advantage of his speed at some point during the 2013 regular season.

4. Jesus Solorzano, RF
Team: Low Class A Greensboro

Jesus Solorzano is probably the top prospect on this list. Born in Venezuela, Solorzano is very toolsy, with the ability to hit for power and average, as well as play solid outfield defense. In 2012, Solorzano struggled with learning the ins and outs of stealing bases, going 7-for-13 on the basepaths. However, in a small sample size this year with Greensboro, Solorzano is 7-for-8 at stealing bases. In his first full season of minor league baseball, Solorzano has shown great progress. He could steal upwards of 30 bases this year.

5. Brent Keys, OF
Team: High Class A Jupiter

Brent Keys was probably the player in the Marlins farm system last year that surprised the most people. Selected out of high school by Miami in the 17th round of the 2008 draft, Keys hit .335/.394/.449 with 18 stolen bases for low Class A Greensboro last season. With only 48 at-bats for Jupiter in 2013, Keys has already stolen three bases in five attempts. Keys is probably the player on this list with the least raw speed, but he is very athletic and has had a lot of success on the base-paths in the past.

Jupiter had their second improbable ninth-inning comeback in three days, defeating a prospect-laden Tampa ball-club 8-7. For the first time all season, Jose Urena got rocked. He struggled against a formidable lineup including Mason Williams and Gary Sanchez, who hit a three-run home run in the first inning.

In a rather uneventful game, Greensboro lost to Tony Renda and the Hagerstown ballclub, a Washington Nationals affiliate. Cody Keefer continued his hot streak, reaching base three times.

Marlins prospects: Charlie Lowell arrested, Andrew Heaney nears return

Editor's note: The date of Lowell's arrest was edited. Thanks to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald for spotting the error. -MJ

If Charlie Lowell and Andrew Heaney could both reach their potential, it's not absurd to think that they both could be in the Marlins starting rotation by late 2014. However, neither Lowell nor Heaney has pitched in a MiLB game since 2012. Charlie Lowell was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend after learning that she cheated on him. Heaney has been rehabbing a lat strain, but is very close to returning to action. The Marlins would benefit by having these two pitching in the minors in order to not disrupt their development.

Charlie Lowell, selected by Miami in the sixth round of the 2011 Amateur Draft, was at times, one of the best pitchers in the low minors last year, pitching for Greensboro. At one point, he had two back-to-back starts where he allowed only one hit across fourteen total innings, with 25 strikeouts. Standing at 6-foot-5, Lowell is an imposing presence on the mound. He throws a downright nasty slider very often and in various situations. Lowell has a ton of potential, but in order to reach it, he needs to avoid stupid decisions, and stay on the field.

On the morning of March 4, Charlie Lowell discovered a text message in his girlfriend's phone from another man. He then choked, slapped, insulted, and eventually threw his girlfriend down the stairs. He spent Saturday in Palm Beach County Jail before being released after all charges were dropped. The Marlins still have yet to announce what their punishment for Lowell will be. In my opinion, for such a horrific act, Lowell shouldn't be playing baseball until at least the All-Star Break. Once he returns, one would assume he will be assigned to high Class A Jupiter.

Drafted ninth overall in 2012 out of Oklahoma State, Andrew Heaney is a talented, methodical left-handed pitcher. He doesn't have a crazy high ceiling, but his floor is probably a number four pitcher. In 2012, Heaney gave up 11 earned runs in just 27 innings pitched, while striking out 30 batters and only walking six. While the idea that maybe he wasn't worthy of the ninth pick still floated around, Heaney did impress the Marlins by being the exact same pitcher they had seen at OSU.

Andrew Heaney has yet to take the mound for any of the Marlins affiliates due to a lat strain. He apparently strained it while pitching in a sim game. Nonetheless, Heaney should be back in action in the next week or so. Look for the Marlins to start Heaney at high Class A Jupiter, where he should spend the entire year. There is an outside chance of Heaney reaching Jacksonville, but it is probably in the Marlins' best interest to keep Heaney in the Florida State League for a full season. Besides staying healthy, Heaney needs to work on developing his curve-ball, deciding whether or not to keep throwing his cutter, and continuing to get strikeouts from all of his pitches.

Charlie Lowell and Andrew Heaney have both had a very rough last couple months, to say the least. Looking on the bright side, they both have more than 3/4 of the season left to get some innings in. For Lowell, he will need to control his off the field issues and focus solely on pitching, and in particular, developing his slider. Heaney, on the other hand, needs to dominate his competition in a fashion that you would expect out of a proven pitcher drafted out of college.

Adam Conley, SP: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K

Despite a rain delay pushing the game's start time back, Adam Conley was able to stay warm and go six innings. Considering how dominant he was, I would be surprised if he couldn't have thrown a complete game on Saturday. Everything was working for him against Pensacola. Conley only needed sixty-five pitches to go six, and he was facing wind out to left field that was at about 15 miles per hour for most of the game.

Christian Yelich continued his petition to take Juan Pierre's job, reaching base all four times. It was also nice to see Jake Marisnick finally hit his first homer of the season.

High Class A: Jupiter Hammerheads
W 5-4 vs. Fort Myers Miracle

Full Box Score

Jared Rogers, SP: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Jordan Conley, RP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

The Jupiter Hammerheads scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Fort Myers and avoid the sweep. In a game in which both Isaac Galloway and Hammerheads manager Andy Haines were both ejected, the Hammerheads fought back to earn a huge win. Ryan Goetz hit a double off the wall, scoring two, to walk off in the ninth.

Low Class A: Greensboro Grasshoppers
L 4-9 vs. Lakewood Blue Claws

Ramon Del Orbe, SP: 3.2 IP, 9 H, 9 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Ramon Del Orbe, who has a 7.28 ERA on the season, had a lot of problems with Larry Greene and the Lakewood lineup. Cody Keefer, who reached base three times Saturday, got off to a surprisingly slow start to the season, but he now has six hits in his last five games.

Triple-A: New Orleans Zephyrs
L 1-2 vs. Salt Lake Bees

New Orleans lost a close one to Salt Lake at home on Thursday night. Kip Wells threw five dominant innings for Salt Lake before handing it over to four relief pitchers. New Orleans as a whole only reached base seven times all night. Duane Below definitely pitched well enough to win. With the loss, New Orleans falls back to .500.

Double-A: Jacksonville Suns
W 10-3 vs. Pensacola Blue Wahoos

Matt Neil, SP: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Arquimedes Caminero, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Christian Yelich had another huge game and Jeff Mathis looked fantastic in a rehab outing. Yelich hit a double, walked, stole a base, and threw out a runner at home. Mathis, age 30, drove in a whopping six runs in just his second game in Jacksonville.

Arquimedes Caminero appears to have gotten his confidence back, as he pitched well in his third straight scoreless outing.

Jupiter got shutout at home by Cole Johnson and three other Fort Myers pitchers. On the bright side, Isaac Galloway hit his third triple of the season and Austin Barnes collected his eighth double.

Low Class-A: Greensboro Grasshoppers
W 5-4 vs. Lakewood Blue Claws

Full Box Score

Alfredo Lopez, 2B: 2-for-5, 2 R, 2B
Juancito Martinez, CF: 1-for-4, SB (14)

Mason Hope, SP: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 K
Blake Logan, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K, SV (7)

Greensboro survived a late surge by Lakewood to win their fifteenth game of the season. Top pitching prospect Mason Hope didn't have his best stuff, but he very well could have been following instructions to work solely on one part of his game. Nonetheless, 4:1 BB/K is not something you want to see from a pitcher with an arsenal as potent as Hope's.

Juancito Martinez, 23, stole his 14th base of the year, putting him in a tie for the third most stolen bases in the league. Playing for Jamestown last year, Martinez only stole 15 bases in 60 games.
