Michael Jong

Manager

Michael Jong has been a Marlins fan since its first World Series victory in 1997. He freely admits to having jumped on the World Series bandwagon the first time, but is proud to say that he never left since then. Michael withstood the lean times in the post-fire sale era of the Marlins, which made experiencing the Fish throughout their 2003 World Series season all the more satisfying. Since 2003, Michael has kept following the team on and off but was intrigued by sabermetrics and advanced analysis of the game in 2008. After a year of familiarizing himself with some of the basics of sabermetrics, Michael began the Marlin Maniac blog over at FanSided and spent two and a half years blogging for Marlin Maniac. In November, Michael took over Fish Stripes and has been here for a year, providing quality Marlins analysis and insight on his favorite team. Michael has also written for Baseball Prospectus and Beyond the Box Score in the past.

Rany Jazayerli on the Marlins' Jacob Turner move

1

Four months ago, the Marlins could have gotten a huge haul of talent for Turner, yet they cut him even though he was pitching better than ever. Turner’s FIP this year is the best of his career. His average fastball velocity (92.6 mph) is the highest of his career. Releasing him defies explanation. If you were to put together a list of the pitchers most likely to be the Arrieta of 2015, Turner might rank at the very top. I’m sure the Marlins had their reasons for getting rid of him, but then I’m sure they had their reasons for getting rid of Millar 11 years ago.

- Rany Jazayerli, noted baseball smart guy, over at Grantland. The Cubs are building a team in the right manner, the Marlins are going in the opposite direction, interestingly enough.
