The Miami Marlins were looking to avoid the sweep at the hands of the San Francisco Giants. Part of the reason why Miami had lost the first two games was because Miami’s bats were cold as ice. But today, the bats woke up. The Giants were looking for their first sweep of the season on Sunday.
The Giants got on the board first, when Gregor Blanco singled to center, which drove in Trevor Brown, and San Francisco jumped out to a 1-0 lead. San Francisco would have to settle for one run, as they stranded Brandon Crawford at third. In the top of the third, Miami was done with trailing.
Christian Yelich grounded into a fielder’s choice, which scored Dee Gordon, and Miami knotted the score at 1. In the top of the fourth, Giancarlo Stanton was up in the fourth, with a 1-14 slump in the back of his mind. Stanton crushed a home run to left, and not only did the Marlins take a 2-1 lead, but Stanton got out of a brutal slump.
In the next half inning, San Francisco had a response to Stanton. Hunter Pence smashed a home run to center, and yet again the game was tied at 2. After the top of the sixth, the Marlins had the 4-2 lead. But in the bottom of the sixth, San Francisco made their surge.
After two RBI singles from Angel Pagan and Brandon Belt, the Giants had all of a sudden tied the game. But the Marlins didn’t need to worry as J.T. Realmuto came to the rescue. The young catcher homered to left, and that’s all the Marlins needed.
The go ahead homer gave Miami the 5-4 win, and the Marlins avoided the series sweep. Realmuto was the true hero, as he went 4-4 for today. Stanton went 3-4 to bump his average back up to .230.
Starting pitcher Adam Conley went 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits for the Marlins. The Marlins outhit the Giants, 14-12. Miami, (6-11) will continue its West Coast swing on Monday, when they take on the Los Angeles Dodgers.
