Miami Marlins sign journeyman righty Edwin Jackson

The Miami Marlins have inked pitcher Edwin Jackson to a one-year, $507.5k deal as first reported by MLB.com's Joe Frisaro and later confirmed by MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

The right-hander spent parts of 2015 season pitching as a member of the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves. In 55.2 combined innings, Jackson compiled a 3.07 ERA while striking out 40 batters and walking 21.

While the 32-year-old was restricted to only relief work by both Chicago and Atlanta, he has had started games for Tampa Bay, Detroit, and Washington.

This move can only be best described a low-risk, because they needed someone with experience to help join the rotation. Something unique about Jackson is his versatility, and if he falters in his starting role, he can always help out Miami as a reliever. This move isn't a jaw-dropper either, but the Marlins could definitely use him in the back end of their five-man rotation.

Frisaro also added that the Marlins are expected to add another starter, and he could possibly be a big name, such as Doug Fister or Cliff Lee.

The 13-year MLB veteran has played with nine teams, his best coming with the Tigers in 2009, where he earned his way into the all-star game after winning 13 games and posting a 3.62 ERA in 214 innings. His career accolades continue, when on June 25, 2010, he no-hit his former team, the Tampa Bay Rays. He also won a World Series with the Cardinals after joining them around the trade deadline. He holds a career 4.58 ERA.
