Manager Mike Redmond kept second baseman Derek Dietrich out of the lineup with hopes of him regaining his confidence and improving defensively. But after Tuesday night's 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, the Marlins sent Dietrich to Triple-A New Orleans to work on his defense.

Dietrich was banged up to begin the year, and that was thought to be the source of his defensive struggles. But over the weekend against Atlanta, Dietrich's inability to execute on traditional double plays and routine throws to first base led to him being benched the last two nights.
Dietrich posted a .246/.342/.431 slash line in 41 games and provided the Marlins with power out of the two spot. His left-handed bat proved to be a nice addition to the Marlins' lineup, but the defensive mistakes became too repetitive. The Marlins made the right move to option Dietrich, since he wasn't improving by sitting on the bench.
Miami was correct to demote Dietrich now, allowing him to further develop before he is called upon again, possibly in a spot with more pressure should the Marlins continue to win consistently.
Redmond has liked the at-bats and defense of Ed Lucas of late, and Lucas will likely see most of the playing time at second base. Jeff Baker could also play second if necessary. While he just recently began his rehab assignment, the move may have been made to allow Rafael Furcal to join the team.
