MLB All-Star Game: Giancarlo Stanton open to participating in Home Run Derby

Eileen Blass-USA TODAY Sports

Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton told ESPN on Wednesday that he is open to participating in this year's home run derby. Stanton missed the 2012 derby after undergoing last minute knee surgery.

Giancarlo Stanton doesn't want to miss out again.

After missing the 2012 Home Run Derby because of last minute knee surgery, Miami's outfielder would be open to participating in this year's derby, according to an ESPN report.

The Marlins slugger missed the 2012 Derby because of last-minute arthroscopic knee surgery, and he wasn't picked by last year's NL Derby captain, David Wright. But he wants to make it known to anyone who's interested: This year, he's ready to take his hacks.

"It would be fun," Stanton told ESPN.com on Tuesday. "I was unfortunate in 2012. I was, what, half a day from being in one? So it would be fun to get my second chance at it."

Stanton hit his 21st home run of the season on Thursday night and may be considered the ideal power hitter to participate in the July contest. Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will have to select Stanton, who was evidently disappointed when he was unable to participate two seasons ago.

Asked if he'd always felt the Derby was tailor-made for him, Stanton said: "Well, I've always watched it growing up. And I obviously know what I can do in batting practice. It would be so much fun to see how it would all pan out, to participate in it."

Speculation about the effects of the the derby on a player's power for the remainder of the season suggests that the number of longs balls could decrease significantly. Playing at Marlins Park, Stanton has blasted 17 home runs and driven in 42 runs.

Miami's star outfielder isn't completely focused on being involved in the derby, though. Stanton was third in the All-Star voting as of Wednesday and has not been one of the more popular fan votes despite his early success hitting in the heart of the Marlins' lineup.

"We've got to work on that," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "There's no way this guy shouldn't be starting in the All-Star Game."

Stanton's consistent approach at the plate has helped the Marlins' offense as a whole, and he should be named an All-Star for his progress after an inconsistent 2013.

Casey McGehee, Henderson Alvarez, and Marcell Ozuna all have been solid thus far and can make cases for an All-Star roster spot, but with Stanton's ability to hit deep home runs consistently, he deserves to at least be considered.
