MLB Scores: Miami Marlins 4, Philadelphia Phillies 0

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Marlins defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 thanks to Nathan Eovaldi and some fortuitous swings (and beans) of Giancarlo Stanton and Casey McGehee.

The Miami Marlins came into tonight's game against the Philadelphia Phillies struggling badly on offense and in need of a good pitching performance to help stop their bleeding from their home stand. They came away with a 4-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies that included both needed things.

The Fish got the runs started early in the game, but didn't score for a long time thereafter. Miami got the party started with a Casey McGehee two-run double that scored Derek Dietrich and Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton got aboard on a hit-by-pitch, one of two on the night in an evening during which he reached base four times in five tries. Stanton was hit twice, walked once, and singled once, but aside from his first-inning foray, the rest of his perseverance did not pay off.

Luckily for Miami, the team still squeezed a few late-inning insurance runs. Jeff Baker reached on an error and then stole second base off of catcher Carlos Ruiz. Ed Lucas bunted him over but reached on another error and pinch-hitter Reed Johnson delivered a single to bring him home. Two batters later, Derek Dietrich singled past Ryan Howard and brought home Lucas to make it a 4-0 game.

The game was a shutout affair by the Marlins thanks to a decent performance by Nathan Eovaldi. Captain EO went 6 1/3 shutout innings but only struck out two batters while walking one. He allowed six scattered hits, as all but one inning contained more than one hit. When Miami needed outs, it turned to Mike Dunn, A.J. Ramos, Kevin Gregg, and finally Chris Hatcher to deliver a hitless set of relief innings and help finish the game.
