Fish Bites: Miami Marlins' Carter Capps may need Tommy John surgery

Miami Marlins' reliever Carter Capps will visit Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday to determine if he needs season-ending Tommy John surgery. Plus links on Randy Wolf, Nathan Eovaldi, and J.T. Realmuto.

Giancarlo Stanton is the best young power hitter in the game, leads the National League in home runs, is batting over .300 on the season, and is second in baseball in WAR (Wins Above Replacement). None of this apparently matters to baseball fans, as Stanton is in fourth place among NL outfielders in terms of votes for the All-Star game.

The Miami Marlins front office continues to confuse the hell out of their fanbase. The team made a surprising acquisition on Sunday morning, acquiring Bryan Morris from the Pirates.

In an effort to bolster their bullpen, the Marlins on Sunday traded the 39th pick in Thursday's draft to the Pittsburgh Pirates for right-handed reliever Bryan Morris [stats]. The pick was one of the Marlins' two competitive balance picks, which are the only draft picks that can be traded. They still have the second pick overall, as well as six of the top 107 picks.

Already sidelined with a right elbow strain, reliever Carter Capps next week will find out whether that injury is season ending. Capps on Wednesday will visit orthopedic surgeon James Andrews for a second opinion. Ideally, Capps' discomfort will resolve with rest and rehab, but the fact he's consulting Andrews appears indicative that surgery is not off the table. "I won't have a level of concern until Wednesday," Capps said. "Right now I'm just kind of waiting in a hold pattern."

The Marlins have held one of the top two draft picks on two occasions. In 1999 they took Josh Beckett at No. 2, and he helped them win a World Series. In 2000 they chose Adrian Gonzalez first overall and he has become a four-time all-star, albeit with other organizations.

atcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list today after taking a foul ball off the mask in Saturday’s game. Saltalamacchia, the Wellington resident, had some dizziness and headaches after the game. He is required to miss at least seven days and if he not cleared at that time he will be transferred to the 15-day DL. "It wasn’t coming back as quick as normal," Saltalamacchia said about the foul tip off the bat of Atlanta’s B.J. Upton in the sixth inning.

Redmond’s solo homer in the seventh tied the game at 6, but Redmond was not given an opportunity to do it again. With the Marlins down one and Redmond set to lead off the ninth, manager Jim Leyland pinch hit Gregg Zaun for Redmond with right-hander Bob Wickman in the game. Redmond would go on to hit 12 more home runs during his 13-year major league career. Including his first off Karl, nine of those came off left-handers...

The knee-jerk reaction to this one would be to keep piling it on the bullpen. After eight mostly stellar innings from Nathan Eovaldi, closer Steve Cishek in a 2-2 game served up a two-run homer to Evan Gattis in the ninth.

Saturday was bittersweet for catcher J.T. Realmuto, who was called up to fill Jarrod Saltalamacchia's open roster spot. The Marlins made the move official on Sunday when Saltalamacchia was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list. Realmuto was recalled from Double-A Jacksonville.

The Marlins will host the Rays in the first game of the 2014 Citrus Series on Monday night in Miami, in both teams' second set of Interleague games this year. The teams will play two games at Marlins Park, followed by two at Tropicana Field. Both teams won their only other Interleague series in April, with the Marlins sweeping the Mariners and the Rays taking two of three from the Reds.

With Steve Cishek on the mound, the ball doesn't usually leave the yard at Marlins Park. Unfortunately for the closer and the Marlins, it did on Sunday afternoon. Evan Gattis crushed a two-run homer in the ninth inning that lifted the Braves to a 4-2 comeback win and a series sweep.
