Fish Cap: Miami Marlins 0, Washington Nationals 5

Henderson Alvarez was plagued by a lack of run support on Tuesday night in Washington, D.C. - Mitchell Layton

The Marlins were shutout in Washington Tuesday night by Nationals lefty Gio Gonzalez and Washington's bullpen.

Marlins can't get bats going

Albeit against a tough opponent in left-hander Gio Gonzalez, the Marlins just could not get anything going at the plate on Tuesday at Nationals Park. Held to only four hits on the night, the Marlins lineup had probably their worst performance at the plate of the new year. There's not much to say here, aside from that the Marlins faced one of the better lefties in the National League and they made him look even better. Tomorrow the Marlins will face another tough pitcher in Jordan Zimmerman, but hopefully they'll be able to push him around a little more than they did Gonzalez.

Alvarez is decent, nothing special

In his second start of the season, Henderson Alvarez pitched well enough to win. However, he didn't make it through six innings and Adam LaRoche gave him problems every time he came to the plate. Alvarez finished with 5.2 innings pitched and 3 runs allowed (only one earned because of a sloppy mistake by Jeff Baker in the sixth), along with four strikeouts and two walks. On the positive side, Alvarez was really solid in terms of pitch count heading into the sixth. He finished with 80 pitches, which is made even more impressive by considering that 24 of them came in that ugly sixth inning. Look for Henderson Alvarez to work deeper into the game in his next start when he takes on the Phillies this coming Sunday.
