MLB Score: Miami Marlins 8, Seattle Mariners 4

Mike Ehrmann

The Miami Marlins come away with a walk-off victory thanks to some questionable decision making and a Giancarlo Stanton walk-off grand slam that bailed out a subpar Nathan Eovaldi start.

The Miami Marlins jumped out to an early lead against the Seattle Mariners, and it seemed like that should have been enough with Nathan Eovaldi on the mound. But Eovaldi was questionable in his performance tonight, going six innings and giving up three runs (one earned) with only four strikeouts and two walks (one intentional). Eovaldi was racking up the pitch count and looking questionable on the mound, but he played well enough for Miami to come up with a win, especially after offensive support from Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Saltalamacchia hit his second homer as a Marlin and had Miami up 4-2 at one point.

The Mariners bounced back and delivered a 4-4 tie thanks to an unearned run in the seventh inning. Abraham Almonte doubled with one out against Mike Dunn, and A.J. Ramos was brought in to face the righty Corey Hart. Derek Dietrich committed yet another error in a long line of his early-season miscues, and it cost the Fish the lead. He was later pulled from the game by manager Mike Redmond for Jeff Baker in a move that could only have been a punishment for the mistake.

This all led to a ninth inning that saw some significant drama. Reed Johnson pinch hit for the pitcher and got aboard with a single. Christian Yelich was then asked to bunt the runner over to second and instead executed a bunt single for his third hit of the night. Then Marcell Ozuna came to the plate and was also asked to bunt, leading to a controversial play at third base that was initially ruled an out but then overturned by replay. The challenge was on whether Kyle Seager had possession of the ball long enough to consider the out, and after some deliberation, the umpires decided against it.

This led to a bases loaded, no out situation for Giancarlo Stanton, and he capitalized with another mammoth home run to walk off for the Fish.
