Fish Cap: Miami Marlins 4, Philadelphia Phillies 5

Miami Marlins drop 5th consecutive game as Jimmy Rollins hits walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday night.

The Miami Marlins continued their frustrating first road trip with an excruciating loss via a Jimmy Rollins walk-off home run. After surrendering 2 runs in the first and third innings, Nathan Eovaldi settled down and pitched admirably before being removed in the 7th inning.  Eovaldi recorded five strikeouts and surrendered no walks. The Marlins bullpen was effective tonight after having been roughed up earlier this week by the Washington Nationals, who hit 8th inning grand slams in consecutive games off Marlins relievers. A.J. Ramos, Mike Dunn and Carlos Marmol held the Phillies in check through the end of regulation.  It was with two outs in the first extra frame that Dan Jennings hung a pitch that the switch hitter Rollins put a charge into, spilling his teammates out of the dugout to greet him at home plate.

It was a shame that the Marlins were unable to get that final out and force an 11th inning because the second Marlins batter in the 11th (barring the worst pinch hitting decision of all time) would have been Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton hit two home runs on Saturday, including a measuring tape job in the 5th inning off Phillies starter Jonathan Pertibone that traveled 469 feet-- the third longest homer of the season, behind only Stanton's 484-foot homer against the Padres and a homer by The Atlanta Braves' Justin Upton's 477-foot blast against the New York Mets. The Marlins recorded 13 hits on Saturday, but could not string enough of those hits together in the same inning to score more than 4 runs.

The Marlins will look to end the sour road trip on a high note with a win on Sunday as they send Henderson Alvarez to the mound to face Phillies right-hander Kyle Kendrick.  Both starters are seeking their first win of 2014.
