Reactions to Miami Marlins signing Carlos Marmol

David Banks

The Miami Marlins signed former Cubs closer Carlos Marmol to a one-year contract on Thursday. Here are some reactions from around the league.

Indeed, the trick for Marmol has never been getting batters to miss his offerings; it has been getting his offerings not to miss the strike zone. He has posted a walk rate of under six-per-nine only three times in his career (2007, 2008, 2011). Meanwhile, he has maintained a career 11.7 K/9 and has only dipped below the 11 K/9 level over one season (last year) since converting fully to relief. Marmol saved 117 games for the Cubs over his tenure, but presumably he will slot in front of Miami 9th inning man Steve Cishek.

Not bad at that price, even though I wouldn’t put too much trust in the guy. I certainly would have a hard time bringing him into a jam given his walk rate, which is easily the worst in baseball. Still, a live arm I guess. If the fish can fix him they’ll have a bargain on their hands. If not, well, I guess they aren’t out too much scratch.

Now the Marlins have taken a chance on the right-hander with excellent stuff, signing him to a one-year, $1.25 million deal, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPN. Marmol has 117 career saves, but hasn’t posted an ERA below 3.42 since 2010.

The Marlins and veteran reliever Carlos Marmol have come to terms on a contract for 2014, reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. According to Heyman's sources, the deal is a major-league contract. Marmol, 31, is coming off a 2013 season in which he pitched to a 4.41 ERA, 87 ERA+ and 1.48 K/BB ratio in 49 innings for the Cubs and Dodgers.
