Why I'm A Fan

In 97' my friend and I rode the middle school bus together. He told me the Marlins had a good team prior to the season starting, but I didn't believe him like much of the country. Boy was I wrong! They won that year. I've been a fan ever since. In 2002 that same friend passed away at the age of 18. He never got to see our favorite team pull off one of the most improbable seasons in MLB history. When the Marlins won that night in New York I walked outside and pointed up at him. I shed a tear and I said that was for you man! That was for you, Rob. I knew he was up there watching and celebrating like the rest of us.

I'm a fan and I will stay a fan because I'm not a quitter. I'm not a fairweather fan. Good or bad I'm here. I've been to the stadium and it's beautiful. I don't like the homerun monstrosity in center field, but that's the least of our problems. I also preferred our old uniforms, but these aren't so bad. Winning cures everything. I feel that this franchise has something special about it and always will. We're underdogs and we fight no matter what. I know there are others out there like me that feel this team is a small representation of who we are. Loria has eroded much of our trust in him, but our love for the team is there. When he leaves we will be back. Until then I'm just another restless Marlins fan with memories of the good times and dreams of what could be. GO FEEESH! You have an angel up there rooting for you, boys. Play inspired.

Sincerely,

Mat S.
