Miami Marlins avoid arbitration with Steve Cishek, Mike Dunn

The Miami Marlins agreed to terms with relievers Steve Cishek and Mike Dunn and outfielder Giancarlo Stanton on Friday, avoiding arbitration with their only three eligible player.

On Friday afternoon before the 1 P.M. salary exchange deadline, the Miami Marlins agreed to terms with relievers Steve Cishek and Mike Dunn and power hitting outfielder Giancarlo Stanton.

All three were arbitration eligible for the first time, and by signing the trio, Miami avoids having to sit through trials in February. Cishek will earn $3.8 million, Dunn $1,4 million, and $6.5 million for Stanton. All of the contract terms were released from the Sun-Sentinel through Twitter.

After Miami traded Heath Bell to the Diamondbacks, Cishek assumed the closer role and was effective when called upon. In 69 games he finished 2013 with a 4-6 record to complement 34 saves and a 3.44 ERA. Cishek is expected to open 2014 as the club's closer, though in the future, if the organization feels he is getting too costly, Carter Capps is thought to have the repertoire and composure to become a closer.

Cishek ended 2013 having converted 29 consecutive save opportunities, and posted an ERA of 0.97 after the All-Star break.

Dunn will serve as a lefty relief option late in games. He will likely be one of two lefties-with the other being Dan Jennings-to come out of Mike Redmond's bullpen. Last season he was 3-4 with 2.66 ERA in just under 68 innings pitched.

Dunn came close to setting a team record for appearances in a season, according to MLB.com.

Dunn, meanwhile, has been a durable and dependable lefty at the back end of the bullpen. In '13, he had a 2.66 ERA in 67 2/3 innings.

Dunn also flirted with setting a team record for appearances in a season. He was in 75 games, which tied him with Robb Nen (1996) and Juan Carlos Oviedo (2009) for the third most by a Miami reliever. The club mark is 78, set by Braden Looper in 2002. Vladimir Nunez was second with 77 appearances.
