Nathan Eovaldi got blasted for two home runs and five runs in just three innings, and the rest of the Miami Marlins bullpen did not fare much better. Meanwhile, the offense was shut down by Tanner Roark and the Washington Nationals.

Play of the Game: Ryan Zimmerman homered in the first inning. Denard Span scored. (-0.162 WPA)

Nathan Eovaldi entered tonight's game against the Washington Nationals as one of the team's hotter hitters, but he left as a battered starter thanks to Ryan Zimmerman and the Washington Nationals. Zimmerman homered twice off of Eovaldi, in the first and third innings, and the Nats put up five runs on nine hits in just three innings against Captain EO. This is his worst start since the San Francisco Giants one, and it was apparent from the get-go that Eovaldi was missing something against the Nationals.

The Marlins' offense did not help matters, as Tanner Roark shut down the Fish in his first big league start. Miami looked like Washington did yesterday versus Jose Fernandez early, and the Fish collected only eight hits total, four against Roark. He stuck out four Marlins and walked none in an impressive starting debut. All but two Marlins in the starting lineup had a hit, but Miami mustered no more than two runs. Two of those hits were by Christian Yelich, who singled twice and was the only multi-hit Marlin.

Miami will look to take the series tomorrow afternoon with Jacob Turner on the mound.
