Play of the Game: Logan Morrison doubled to right-center field in the fourth inning. Giancarlo Stanton advanced to third base. (+0.139 WPA)

The Miami Marlins picked up an early 2-0 lead on the back of hits by Giancarlo Stanton, Logan Morrison, and Donovan Solano. Tom Koehler struck out eight Pittsburgh Pirates batters in five innings, with only one walk and one homer allowed.

Somehow, the Marlins ended up losing this game too.

Koehler was impressive for most of the game, having struck out a career-best eight hitters and recorded a decent seven whiffs in 90 pitches thrown. But after allowing a third-inning home run to Andrew McCutchen, things erupted for Koehler in the fifth inning. Thing started looking bad when, on a 0-1 pitch to shortstop Jordy Mercer, Koehler wildly threw a ball at his shoulder or forearm, dinging Mercer and letting two man on with one out. Opposing starter Charlie Morton helped his cause with a single to right field, but only after the runners advanced on a wild pitch in the dirt that just evaded Rob Brantly. Mercer then advanced on the very next plate appearance on another wild pitch, giving the PIrates a 3-2 lead they never relinquished.

The Fish have clinched the series loss but will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon.
