Miami Marlins Daily Minor League Report: August 2

Marc Serota

All six Miami Marlins affiliates won their games, largely due to strong pitching performances from Brian Flynn, Anthony DeSclafani, Austin Brice, and Trevor Williams.

Triple-A: New Orleans Zephyrs
W 4-1 vs. Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Full Box Score

Kyle Jensen, LF: 1-for-3, R, HR
Kyle Skipworth, C: 1-for-3, R, HR

Brian Flynn, SP: 7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 6 SO
Josh Wall, RP: 1.0 IP, 3 H, R, ER

The Sky Sox kept the Zephyrs scoreless for seven consecutive innings, eventually taking a one-run lead off a series of singles. New Orleans answered back, smashing four back-to-back extra-base hits, including two home runs.

Double-A: Jacksonville Suns
W 1-0 vs. Tennessee Smokies

Full Box Score

Derek Dietrich, 2B: 0-for-2, BB, SO

Anthony DeSclafani, SP: 7.0 IP, 6 H, BB, 7 SO

The Smokies collected twice as many hits as the Suns, yet were shutout by a dominant Anthony DeSclafani and Jacksonville bullpen. A Michael Main single scored the only run of the game.

High Class A: Jupiter Hammerheads
W 6-2 vs. Lakeland Flying Tigers

Full Box Score

Noah Perio, 2B: 2-for-4
Yordy Cabrera, RF: 0-for-4 SO
Austin Nola, SS: 2-for-3, R

Josh Hodges, SP: 6.0 IP, 5 H, R, ER, BB, 3 SO

The Hammerheads used every means at their disposal to outscore the Flying Tigers, driving in runners with by singles, errors, and even by stealing home.

Low Class A: Greensboro Grasshoppers
W 8-2 vs. Delmarva Shorebirds

Full Box Score

Matt Juengel, 3B: 3-for-4, R, 2B
Jesus Solorzano, RF: 2-for-4, R, 2B

Austin Brice, SP: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, ER, 2 BB, 5 SO

Austin Brice's 5.61 ERA in July might suggest that he is still derailed, stuck in the same rut that has ruined his season. In fact, he showed great improvement in his peripheral numbers. He struck out 30 batters in 25 and two-thirds innings pitched, and only walked 12 hitters.

Short-Season: Batavia Muckdogs
W 8-6 @ Lowell Spinners

Full Box Score

J.T. Riddle, 3B: 2-for-4, 3 R, 2 2B, BB
Felix Munoz, 1B: 4-for-5, 2 R
Austin Dean, LF: 1-for-5, 3B, 2 SO

Trevor Williams, SP: 3.0 IP, H, R, BB, SO

The Marlins have capped Trevor Williams to just three-innings per outing, so it's difficult to judge him fully. But in brief foray into professional baseball, the right-hander has a 3.60 ERA in 20 innings pitched, with six walks and 15 strikeouts.

Rookie: GCL Marlins
W 10-1 vs. GCL Cardinals

Full Box Score

Ryan Aper, CF: 1-for-4, 2 R, 2B, BB
Victor Castro, RF: 3-for-5, R, 2B, HR

Elih Villanueva, SP: 5.0 IP, 5 H, BB, 5 SO

Victor Castro delivered two enormous hits for the GCL Marlins, including a three-run homer in the fourth inning, and a bases clearing double later in the eighth inning. Castro is currently batting .279/.351/.500.
