Not even Rookie of The Year candidate Jose Fernandez could end the Marlins' losing streak. Miami has consistently struggled against the Atlanta Braves in recent years, and the squad was unable to put together a rally in a 2-1 loss on Friday night.
Jose Fernandez sets record, ends night with a loss
Despite the fact that Jose Fernandez ended the night as the new franchise leader for strikeouts by a rookie, the Cuban phenom still left Turner Field with a loss.
After an Elliot Johnson double with one out in the bottom of the first inning, Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman hit a two run home run to give the Braves a lead they wouldn't lose.
With 173 strikeouts, Fernandez broke Scott Olsen's rookie strikeout mark (166) set in 2006.
Over his six innings, Fernandez gave up three hits and just the pair of first inning runs while walking two and striking out eight.
Fernandez also contributed offensively, leading off the third inning with a triple and then scoring on a Christian Yelich single to left field.
Because of a 30 pitch fourth inning, Manager Mike Redmond decided to pull Fernandez.
Marlins can't rally against Julio Teheran
The Marlins have had a difficult time consistently scoring runs throughout the course of the season, and on Friday night against Braves starter Julio Teheran, the struggles continued.
Miami scored their lone run in the third, when Jose Fernandez hit a triple to leadoff the inning and left fielder Christian Yelich drove him in with a single to left.
Against Teheran and the Braves' bullpen, the Marlins were 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
Miami had an opportunity to tie the game in the third, but with the bases loaded Placido Polanco lined out and the Marlins were unable to put together a rally thereafter.
Ramos, Jennings and Qualls keep Braves off the board
After Fernandez was taken out, the Braves were unable to add any insurance runs against the Marlins' bullpen.
Atlanta was able to put together a string of hits against A.J. Ramos, however Dan Jennings and Chad Qualls both shut down the Braves' lineup in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.
