Miami Marlins news: Sam Dyson promoted from Triple-A for bullpen depth

Scott Rovak-USA TODAY Sports

After a poor outing, the Marlins optioned reliever Arquimedes Caminero to Triple-A and recalled righty Sam Dyson, who despite a large ERA and little bullpen experience will serve as a long reliever out of Miami's bullpen.

Nothing has ever come easy for Miami Marlins' reliever Sam Dyson.

Acquired off of waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays in January, Dyson has never been healthy or consistent enough to pitch at the Major League level.

While helping South Carolina win a College World Series title in 2010, Dyson had to undergo surgery to repair the labrum of his pitching shoulder. Although it appeared as if Dyson was prepared to make his professional baseball debut in 2011, the opportunity was put aside because he had to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair his right elbow.

"Probably just not understanding my body. Just going out there and trying to throw too hard all the time and wearing down and getting injured," Dyson said of his injury history in an interview with the Sun-Sentinel.

After appearing in a handful of games for the Blue Jays last season, Dyson has posted a career 40.50 Major League earned run average. He gave up three runs in 1/3 of an inning against the New York Yankees last season which inflated his ERA.

"In my opinion, it was bleeder after bleeder. Didn't give up any home runs or balls off the wall," Dyson said of his first visit to Yankee Stadium. "I can cut [the ERA] in half pretty quick."

Dyson has made only 61 appearances throughout the course of his minor league career. This season for the Marlins, Dyson posted a 2.67 ERA in 21 starts for three of Miami's minor league squads.

Dyson made the transition back to starting after appearing out of the bullpen for Toronto. He lacked a breaking ball to retire hitters who he would have to face several times in one game, which he was able to develop while in the minors.

"I really didn't know I was going to start when I came over here," Dyson said. "It's pretty good because it's routine-based."

According to several reports, Dyson was expected to be called up once rosters expand on September 1st. Though he will initially be working out of the bullpen as the team's long reliever, Dyson is a candidate to be inserted into the starting rotation once the Marlins shut Jose Fernandez down for the season.

Dyson was called up after the Marlins sent reliever Arquimedes Caminero to Triple-A following Wednesday night's game against the Washington Nationals that was delayed by rain.

"He's been starting, so he's able to give us multiple innings, which is nice to have [in the bullpen]," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond, who had Dyson for part of last season at Class A Dunedin. "He's done a nice job in the minor leagues. I know he's got a good fastball, a sinker. We'll give him an opportunity and see what he can do."
