MLB Scores: Miami Marlins 6, Los Angeles Dodgers 2

Marc Serota

The Miami Marlins got another excellent outing from Jose Fernandez in a marquee duel against Hyun-Jin Ryu and the red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers. It was the Marlins' offense that broke out in the eighth inning, leading to a 6-2 win.

Attendance: 27,127
Hero of the Game: Logan Morrison (0.170 WPA)
Goat of the Game: Adeiny Hechavarria (-0.130 WPA)
Play of the Game: Logan Morrison doubled to right field in the sixth inning. Donovan Solano scored. Giancarlo Stanton advanced to third base. (+0.203 WPA)

The Miami Marlins and Los Angeles Dodgers were probably expecting a pitcher's duel between aces Jose Fernandez and Hyun-Jin Ryu. In the early going, that is what they got, as the two pitchers remained even on each other despite some early difficulties. While Fernandez was able to escape two first-inning walks alive with no runs allowed, Ryu could not work past his own jam in the third inning, as Christian Yelich doubled home Fernandez, who reached on a single. Donovan Solano followed with his own single to score the second run of the game.

The Fish held a 2-0 lead, and for a while it seemed like that would be enough for Fernandez, who was cruising after the first. In total, he gave up two runs in six innings, but he did so with eight strikeouts and three walks (one intentional) to his name. His other major difficulty came in the fifth inning, when Fernandez gave up consecutive singles to the bottom of the order. Ryu bunted too short and Jeff Mathis made a throw to Ed Lucas at third base for a possible double play, but Lucas dropped the ball and the bases were loaded with no outs.

Fernandez, however, worked out of the jam. He got Carl Crawford to ground out almost into a double play, but then struck out Yasiel Puig on a high fastball, which led to a heated tantrum in the visitor's dugout by Puig. Fernandez then whiffed Adrian Gonzalez to limit the damage.

The Fish did give up the tying run the next inning on a Juan Uribe double, but Solano, Giancarlo Stanton, and Logan Morrison put the Fish ahead 3-2 until the eighth inning. Miami scored three runs on the inning, and it all started with Stanton's 15th homer of the season, a shot to deadaway center field that landed at the base of the Monstrosity. The Marlins tacked on two more runs and made it a comfortable 6-2 win.
