The Miami Marlins flirted with another loss to get them swept by the San Francisco Giants to start this 10-game home stand, but the Fish rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning. Then, after both Tom Koehler and Madison Bumgarner were knocked out of the game with sub par performances, the back-and-forth affair heated up.
Mike Dunn entered the game in the seventh inning, and the inning exploded for the Fish. Brandon Crawford led off with a home run, and backup catcher Hector Sanchez doubled in another run to put the Giants up 5-4. The Fish, however, were able to bounce back against Guillermo Moscoso, who led the bottom half of the frame with a Christian Yelich single and Donovan Solano double.
The eighth inning went by without a significant hitch for the Marlins, and the bottom half eventually sealed the deal for the team. Ed Lucas reached on a single and Jeff Mathis hit what appeared to be a soft, sinking fly ball to center field. Andres Torres, however, could not quite reach the ball and dove for it. He missed and allowed it to ricochet off of his head and into left field, and that gave Lucas enough time to score the eventual game-winning run. Mathis also got the team on the board early with a solo shot, so he provided some decent offense today.
Steve Cishek picked up his 27th save of the year and the Marlins avoided the sweep, 6-5.
