The Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves could not buy a run against starters Nathan Eovaldi and Alex Wood. Wood struck out seven Fish hitters and walked just one in six innings, giving up just two hits one the way. Eovaldi, however, stepped it up just bit more. Through seven innings, Eovaldi struck out eight hitters and walked three, but he also gave up just one hit. The fastball was on top of its game again, averaging 96.2 mph and continuing its hot run. Eovaldi got six of his ten swings and misses on his heater.
So who would break the tie in a tightly-contested pitcher's duel? In a game with no Giancarlo Stanton, would you believe it was Adeiny Hechavarria who almost singlehandedly manufactured the run. He led off the ninth inning with a triple to deep center field on an 0-1 pitch. It was a well-hit line drive that looked for a second like it had a shot to leave, but it landed at the base of the outfield wall. Reliever Jordan Walden then got a 2-2 count on Ed Lucas before he uncorked a pitch in the dirt that scooted between Evan Gattis's glove and just behind him, allowing Hechavarria to score and the Marlins to win.
The Fish snap their own six-game losing streak and break the Braves' 14-game winning streak at the same time.
