Hero of the Game: Placido Polanco (0.249 WPA)
Goat of the Game: Tom Koehler (-0.171 WPA)
Play of the Game: Placido Polanco homered in the sixth inning. Logan Morrison scored. (+0.232 WPA)
The Miami Marlins won their third straight game in a row, but this time around, it was not the team's most obvious heroes who came to the rescue. The Fish went down early in the game thank to Tom Koehler's worst start of the season. The Minnesota Twins jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to Koehler walking two batters and committing an error leading to Joe Mauer and Josh Willingham delivering runs with no one out. The Twins scored early and drew more walks from koehler, who finished with four on the day versus just one strikeout.
But when Koehler failed the Fish, the Marlins came back with offense from some unusual sources. It started in the fifth inning, when Jeff Mathis (!!) slammed a two-run homer to left field. Yes, Jeff Mathis, who previously had just five hits on the year. But hey, Mathis's six total hits were all extra-base hits, so he is the power king in South Florida! Giancarlo Stanton drove in another run at the end of the inning with a ground out to tie the game up at 3-3.
Then Placido Polanco, less than 24 hours removed from receiving the official Fish Stripes nickname of "The Corpse," proved that he had a little more left in the tank with his own two-run homer as well. Both Mathis and Polanco hit line drives, but while Polanco's barely cleared the fence and landed in the home bullpen area, Mathis drove it out into the blue seats out in left field. Either way, the two most unlikely home-run candidates in the lineup launched a pair of two-run homers to power the Fish.
Steve Cishek came in and delivered another clean inning with another strikeout to get his 14th save of the season, and the Marlins have now won three straight. This is the team's 14th win in June, eclipsing the team's total wins in both the 2011 and 2012 seasons in June.
