Play of the Game: Giancarlo Stanton homered in the eighth inning. Juan Pierre scored. (+0.634 WPA)
The Miami Marlins got out to a nice early lead and looked like they might cruise to a victory behind the performance of Jacob Turner. Turner had the Milwaukee Brewers chasing pitches out of the zone and swinging and missing as he has been all season long. He got the Brewers to miss eight pitches, good for a swing-and-miss rate of 9.0 percent. That led to an impressive six strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
Unfortunately, Turner suffered from the problem of "one big inning," and he found his struggle in the seventh inning. He yielded a walk to Rickie Weeks and a triple to Yuniesky Betancourt (!). The triple was complicated by an ineffective slide by Giancarlo Stanton in an attempt to cut the ball off short. The ball careened off of Stanton's knee and sneaked past him, leading to a triple despite the mistake. This led to a 4-3 lead for the Brew Crew.
But the Marlins got ahead early thanks in part to a home run by Derek Dietrich, who launched his sixth homer of the year into the left field home run porch. Then the team's way of recapturing the lead was, once again, via the home run, as Giancarlo Stanton launched his first home run on his return from the disabled list. The shot went out close to the Monstrosity in center field, just left of it and quite deep in Marlins Park. The homer was particularly important because it came with two outs with Juan Pierre on base, as Pierre reached on a seemingly innocuous single to center field.
The Marlins steal a win with Steve Cishek finishing the game off, and they will look to take the series win tomorrow.
