The Miami Marlins had an ugly overall game, as they struggled on offense, fielding, and pitching in their 5-0 loss to the San Diego Padres.

Play of the Game: Carlos Quentin reached on error on a popup to Rob Brantly. Evereth Cabrera scored.

The iconic play of tonight's game between the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres turned out to be the most important play of the night, and it was an ugly one at that.

In the first inning, with two outs and Padres shortstop Evereth Cabrera at second base off a steal, Carlos Quentin hit a popup that drifted towards fair territory a few feet in front of home plate. Catcher Rob Brantly took off the mask, but was having difficulty spotting the ball as it came down. He eventually dropped the pop fly, leading to Cabrera scoring and giving the Padres a 1-0 lead.

It all went downhill from there.

The Fish committed two errors, including that one, in the game, and starting pitcher Wade LeBlanc did not give them much room for error in his play. He struck out three batters whiled walking three and giving up four hits in five innings pitched. One of his hits allowed was a second inning solo home run to Jedd Gyorko, and it represented all that was bad in LeBlanc's game. He failed to limit baserunners or control them when they reached base, as Cabrera ended up stealing two bases against the Marlins as well.

Meanwhile, the Marlins' offense dozed off, accumulating just five hits and three walks but separating them out enough to not cause any damage. The Marlins had situations early in the game with a runner on third and bases loaded, but the team could not capitalize. Padres starter Andrew Cashner avoided the first two threats and cruised to four straight 1-2-3 innings, finishing the night with 7 1/3 shutout innings pitched.

The Marlins will try again tomorrow night, with native San Diegoer Alex Sanabia taking the hill.
