The Miami Marlins fielded a number of veteran players in their lineup, but it was the two youngest players on the team that ended up delivering for the Fish. The Marlins won 2-0 versus Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies thanks to the efforts of prospects Marcell Ozuna and Jose Fernandez, both of whom had excellent games.

Jose Fernandez flashed back to his first dominant start against the New York Mets, as he put up his best start to date. Fernandez struck out nine Phillies batters, walked just one, and allowed only one hit. That is two baserunners total in seven innings of work. Freddy Galvis was the lone Phillies player who reached base against Fernandez, who at one point retired 17 straight batters. He also looked dominant for the first time in three starts, getting plenty of swings and misses on his fastball and curveball and hitting the strike zone more frequently.

The Marlins provided their offense in the way of two solo home runs. The first was Marcell Ozuna's first career major league home run, while the second came from utility infielder Chris Valaika. For Valaika, it was his second career homer and his first as a Marlin.

Both home runs came off of Cole Hamels, who otherwise held the Fish down just as well as Fernandez. Hamels struck out six batters and walked none in the effort, but the home runs were enough to sink him as the Phillies could not get anyone on base against Fernandez and the Marlins bullpen. The Fish allowed just three baserunners all evening.

The Marlins will look to complete the second half of the attempted split of this four-game series, with Kevin Slowey on the mound tomorrow afternoon. The game starts at 2:35 PM EST.
