The Miami Marlins appeared to be buried by Matt Magill and the Los Angeles Dodgers when the blue team hit an early three-run home run to open things up. Adrian Gonzalez's first-inning three-run home run appeared to be the start of another ugly game for Jose Fernandez and the Marlins, but Fernandez settled in directly afterwards and the Marlins' much-maligned offense recovered.
Fernandez gave up a single, walk, and home run to open up the game, but he immediately struck out Matt Kemp afterwards and began another strong start. After the first inning, Fernandez went five more and gave up five more hits but no damage. He also struck out six more batters and seven in total and walked just the lone player in the first inning (he had one other intentional walk), capping off a six-inning, three-run performance. The early concerns about Fernandez's strikeouts are being allayed with each start, as his rate has climbed to 25.7 percent on the season.
The Marlins were still down 3-0 despite Fernandez's efforts, but that all changed in the fourth inning when, with two on and two out, rookie Derek Dietrich hit a line drive on a 3-2 count off of Magill and sent it over the right field fence in Dodgers Stadium. It was Dietrich's first home run in his major league career, and his parents were in the stands to witness the occasion. That tied the game up with one swing.
The Fish broke the tie in the seventh inning when the team opened the frame against Ronald Belisario with a single by Rob Brantly and a pinch-hit double by Chris Coghlan off the very top of the wall in deep center field. Juan Pierre singled and Adeiny Hechavarria grounded into a double play, driving in the two baserunners and giving the Fish a 5-3 lead.
Steve Cishek came in the ninth inning and had an uneventful two-strikeout performance to cap his fifth save and the Marlins' 11th win.
