Miami Marlins roster moves: Kyle Skipworth optioned to Triple-A, Joe Mahoney returns from disabled list

After the Miami Marlins' third win of the year, the team made a move to bolster its thinning first baseman situation. The Fish brought back Joe Mahoney from the disabled list, while Kyle Skipworth is sent back to the minors.

The Miami Marlins just pulled off their third win of the season and their most complete one yet, and the team had additional good news to bring to the table. With Logan Morrison and Casey Kotchman out with injury, the Fish have been stretched at first base, but the Marlins are remedying that by reinstating Joe Mahoney from the disabled list.

To make room, the Marlins optioned Kyle Skipworth, and rightly so. Skipworth, whom in yesterday's game thread was deemed the white flag / towel of the Marlins, had just three plate appearances, yielding one walk and one double play grounder. Skipworth was clearly not someone ready for major league action, and his placement in Triple-A is more to open up Double-A space for catching prospects like J.T. Realmuto in the near future rather than any confidence in Skipworth's play last year.

Mahoney comes to the Marlins after an acceptable spring training in which he hit .233/.258/.567 in 31 plate appearances, with three home runs to his name. The Fish are hoping that he can fill in admirably during the injury time to the team's other first basemen and that he can provide some much needed pop into a lineup that only just hit its third home run of the season. Mahoney's calling card, ironically, is not power, as his highest ISO in the minors was at just .225 for a decent chunk of season. The Marlins are hoping he makes enough contact to make that middling power worthwhile in the lineup.
